COVID-19 Outbreak: Sheetz worker tests positive
Carrolltown store temporarily closed as new cases fall again
Sheetz on Sunday closed its Carrolltown store temporarily for cleaning and disinfection — including the gas pumps — after an employee tested positive for the coronavirus.
The store was closed about 1 p.m., immediately after the company was notified of the employee’s condition, according to a news release from the company and company spokesman Nick Ruffner.
The company is working with employees who may have had close contact with the employee who tested positive, according to Ruffner, who spoke by phone.
The company is following state Department of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines in dealing with the matter.
Those guidelines call for quarantining those who have had close contact.
The company can determine who may have had such contact based on shift assignments, Ruffner said.
Customers concerned about the possibility of having had contact with the employee can call 1-800-487-5444, according to Ruffner.
The company declined to provide specific information on the employee who tested positive.
All store employees will be fully paid during the closure, the news release said.
It’s not certain how long the store will remain closed, Ruffner said.
The store is the third or fourth in Pennsylvania to close temporarily because of COVID-19, Ruffner said.
A couple of stores in other states also had to close temporarily, he said.
New cases drop
On Sunday, the number of new coronavirus cases dropped 29 percent — the third day in a row in which new cases declined, according to a report by the DoH.
Over those three days, the decline was 40 percent, down from Thursday’s new-case number of 1,989.
The number of new deaths also declined, from the 78 in each of the previous two days to 13 on Sunday.
A caveat: it was the weekend — and not only that, but Easter weekend.
On Tuesday, in answer to a question from a reporter on the daily DoH webcast, State Health Secretary Rachel Levine acknowledged that some county-level statistics come in late from the weekend, which may suggest that Easter Sunday’s statistics — and perhaps the ones that will be coming today as well — may not be complete.
