Dick’s Pharmacy closing three locations
Prescriptions to be shifted to Rite Aid
A longtime family-owned business is closing a part of its business.
Dick’s Pharmacy, opened by Gerald G. Dick at 1903 Fourth St. in 1928, is closing its three pharmacies.
The Altoona location, the Claysburg location, which opened in 1980, and the Williamsburg location, which opened in 1985, will close their doors the week of
Nov. 11, said Bob Dick, Dick’s Pharmacy president.
Claysburg will close at the end of business Nov. 11, Altoona at the end of business Nov. 12 and Williamsburg at then end of business Nov. 13, Dick said.
Customers’ prescriptions will be shifted to various Rite Aid locations.
Claysburg prescriptions will be sent to Rite Aid in Roaring Spring, Altoona prescriptions to Rite Aid on Chestnut Avenue and Williamsburg prescriptions to the Rite Aid in Hollidaysburg or Huntingdon, Dick said.
Dick said plans to close had been in the works for about three years and cited an increase in the “drop in reimbursement” at the pharmacy level, which led to a decrease in revenue as the reason for closing.
“Over the last six or seven years we went from a six-figure gross profit corporation to a $70,000 to $80,000 losing corporation. It has been about a million dollar turnaround,” Dick said.
Some 25 to 30 employees will be affected by the closings.
“It breaks my heart. The only regret is my employees,” Dick said.
Dick said the Dick’s Home Care side of business will remain open and expand into the pharmacy location.
