Conemaugh to open outpatient center soon

Facility will eliminate need for travel

EBENSBURG — Conemaugh Health System of Duke LifePoint Healthcare will open an outpatient center off Route 22 here at the end of the month, replacing the hospital’s three primary care locations in the borough, while adding additional services.

The newly constructed, $24-million, 41,500-square-foot building will enable area residents to get outpatient care in one location, eliminating the periodic need for traveling between the three existing locations for various kinds of care, according to hospital spokeswoman Emily Korns, who accompanied reporters on a tour of the almost-complete building Monday.

The new facility, which will open in stages on Nov. 30, Dec. 2 and Dec. 9, will offer primary care, specialty care and diagnostics, according to Korns.

It will be like an outpatient center that Conemaugh opened in East Hills in Richland in 2018 and another it plans to open in January in Somerset, Korns said.

Services that will be available in the new building that haven’t been available in Ebensburg before include neurosurgery consulting and vascular ultrasound, according to Korns and Tony Campagna, vice president of ancillary, post-acute and support services for Conemaugh.

Full-time CT scanning services with stationary equipment will also be available at the new building, after having been available in Ebensburg only two days a week, with a mobile unit, Korns said.

The blood draw area in the new building will enable phlebotomists to register patients, draw their blood and label the vials containing that blood in the same small one-patient bay, to ensure against misidentifications, Korns said.

“It’s a patient safety thing,” she said.

The new building houses a separate imaging section for women, to provide privacy, she said.

The physical therapy gym has rubber-and-cork floors to help staff handle long hours on their feet, and curtained treatment bays for patient privacy, according to one of the officials conducting the tour.

Ebensburg Family Medicine, Conemaugh Physician Group-Ebensburg Industrial Park and Conemaugh Physician Group-Ebensburg Jamesway Road are merging to become Conemaugh Physician Group-Ebensburg Primary Care, as part of the establishment of the new facility, which is at 139 Cook Road., near the Route 22 and 219 interchange — behind the new Quality Inn.

Blood draw and diagnostic imaging and Conemaugh MedWELL Urgent Care will begin service in the new building Nov. 30.

Conemaugh Corporate Care, rehabilitation services and the Conemaugh Physician Group’s cardiology, orthopedics, urology and obstetrics and gynecology practices — along with Dr. Enrique Koh and physician’s assistant Julie Reitnauer — will begin services in the new building Dec. 2.

The Conemaugh Physician Group’s neurosurgery practice, along with Dr. Basma Khalil, Dr. Nicole Rossman-Clapper and physician assistants Erika George and Elizabeth Woods, will begin services at the new building Dec. 9.

There will be some type of automatic food vending service in the new building that will include options for sandwiches, snacks and coffee, according to Campagna.
