HOLLIDAYSBURG -- The former Williamsburg Community High School teacher accused of sexually assaulting a male student waived her appearance Friday for an arraignment in Blair County Court.
Nikki Varney, 44, 1971 Scotch Valley Road, Hollidaysburg, remains free on bail posted after she was arrested in late August and charged with statutory sexual assault, unlawful contact with a minor, corruption of a minor and sexual contact with a student.
State police at Hollidaysburg, who filed the charges against Varney, indicate in court documents that she admitted to having sex with a 15-year-old student, once at her residence and once at Canoe Creek State Park. Varney, who was placed on administrative leave from her teaching position after her arrest, resigned her position with the Williamsburg Community School District effective Sept. 8.
Varney had also won a Democratic nomination in the spring primary to be a candidate for Hollidays-burg Area School Board in the November election. But she subsequently withdrew from the race, and her name is not on the ballot.
