HOLLIDAYSBURG — A Blair County inmate was pronounced dead on Monday at UPMC Altoona after hanging himself in the prison, Coroner Patty Ross said Friday.

Services were held Friday for Rodger P. Vasas, 63, Gallitzin, who had been in prison on a probation violation. Vasas was found hanging in his cell, and CPR was initiated, Ross said Friday.

Warden Michael Johnston declined comment on the incident and referred the Mirror to Hollidaysburg Borough police for information on its investigation. As of Friday, police had not responded.

Ross said her office ruled the death a suicide and found no foul play.

Judge Daniel Milliron, who chairs the prison board, and commissioners Chairman Bruce Erb also acknowledged the death but declined further comment.
