Cambria Township OKs new regulations for outdoor furnaces

1 min read

EBENSBURG – Cambria Township supervisors on Monday approved a new ordinance regulating outdoor wood burners and furnaces.

Solicitor Dennis Govachini said the ordinance will replace a previous one and updates height and distance requirements.

Under the new ordinance, residents must apply for a permit showing the furnace or burner is at least 50 feet from all property lines and on a lot of at least 1 acre.

Furnaces or burners also must have a stack or chimney at least 2 feet taller than the attached home’s roof peak.

A code enforcement officer may suspend a resident’s permit for a burner or furnace if “malodorous air contaminants” are noticed beyond the resident’s property, if emissions damage neighbors’ property or if its emissions “interfere with the reasonable enjoyment of” neighbors’ lives.

Supervisors said all existing furnaces or burners don’t have to comply with the ordinance unless they alter them in some way.

The ordinance finalized months of debate after some residents brought complaints to the supervisors.
