The former Penns Valley School District athletic director who pleaded guilty to stealing more than $23,000 from the district and the Mountain League was sentenced Friday to spend up to four years in jail, according to a release from the Centre County District Attorney’s office.
Donald W. Hosterman, 68, of Millheim pleaded guilty on July 17 to two counts of theft and one count of receiving stolen property. His total sentence is between 90 days and four years, according to the release, and Hosterman will spend the first 90 days under house arrest.
The charges stem from two different incidents. In February, Hosterman was charged with stealing $390 from Penns Valley’s athletic funds, according to the release.
Hosterman, as athletic director, was responsible for putting the money from ticket sales to sporting events in a safe, according to the release.
The discrepancy was discovered when a district secretary counted the athletic department’s money without Hosterman’s knowledge.
A surveillance camera also showed Hosterman placing money in his pockets while counting funds, according to the release.
Hosterman was charged with the second theft in March, after the Mountain League found money was missing from its accounts in a review of statements dating back to 2010, according to the release. Hosterman, who served as the Mountain League’s treasurer, wrote himself checks on 27 different occasions, according to the release, for a total of $22,800.
The Mountain League includes teams from eight schools: Bald Eagle Area, Penns Valley, Tyrone, Central, Huntingdon, Clearfield, Bellefonte and Philipsburg-Osceola.
