Tyrone Fitness Club opens second facility

TYRONE -- The Tyrone Fitness Club is expanding.

The club recently purchased the former Encompass Health building at 1225 Pennsylvania Ave., which will become the club's second location, owner Kyle Updyke said.

"Our current location isn't going anywhere. This new facility is an expansion of Tyrone Fitness Club, and our existing gym will continue operating as usual," Updyke said. "Our gym at the Tyrone Armory will continue operating as usual and members will have access to both facilities."

Tyrone Fitness Club opened in December 2016 when it purchased an existing gym in Tyrone that was closing.

"We started in a small storefront on Pennsylvania Avenue and moved to the Tyrone Armory in 2019," Updyke said.

Updyke said the business had been hoping to open a second location, but plans for an additional location on 10th Street didn't work out.

He said memberships have steadily grown over the past few years with members coming mainly from the Tyrone/Bellwood areas, which has driven the need for additional space.

"As the gym has grown, we've needed more room for equipment, particularly during the typical busy times of a gym. The new location will give members another option, with an emphasis on cardio equipment and weight machines, plus a selection of free weights," Updyke said. "The goal for the Pennsylvania Avenue location is to be more inviting and welcoming to the recreational/novice gym member, while still having everything the experienced gym user may need."

Tyrone Fitness Club is family-operated between Updyke, his father Ed, and his wife Jessica.

Updyke said he hopes the Pennsylvania Avenue location will be up and running by the end of the year.

He said memberships are currently $25 per month for a single membership or $45 per couple, with 24-hour access for members. They also accept silver sneakers.
