Signalmen agree to sick leave
Norfolk Southern Corp. announced Monday that a 10th union has agreed to a paid sick leave plan.
The agreement with the Brotherhood of Railway Signalmen will provide about 900 signal employees with four new days of paid sick leave per year while also offering them the flexibility to use up to three additional days of existing paid time off as sick leave.
Ten of Norfolk Southern's 12 unions now have access to paid sick leave, benefiting about 6,900 railroaders.
McD's accepting grant requests
Local McDonald's restaurants owned by Joe Nyanko are offering MAC Grants to help area middle school teachers Make Activities Count for their students.
The MAC Grants program provides financial support so teachers can supplement regular classroom curriculums with hands-on activities.
Since the program's inception 29 years ago, McDonald's restaurants have awarded more than $3.3 million to support local teachers.
Fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grade teachers may apply for grants of up to $500.
Applications are available at www.macgrants.com. Completed applications must be submitted by Aug. 4.
GACTC offering new programs
The Greater Altoona Career and Technology Center has added three programs for the 2023-24 academic year for its adult education programming:
– An electrical trades diploma program, which will train students to install, troubleshoot and service electrical equipment and systems.
– An online medical administrative assistant diploma program will begin in January and conclude in September. An internship will be required.
– A hybrid medical assistant diploma program will run January through December. An in-person internship will be required and students will be required to attend classes at the GACTC one to two evenings each week to practice hands-on skills and competencies.
