Car wash project part of construction blitz

ModWash set to open several dozen locations

The new car wash slated to be built soon on an outparcel of the former Kmart property on Plank Road is part of a construction blitz, according to officials who spoke Tuesday during a meeting of the Logan Township Planning Commission.

The ModWash will be built by a new firm of the same name that is planning to break ground this spring on a “baker’s dozen” of such facilities in western Pennsylvania and Ohio, according to Joe Uhler, director of real estate for Hutton of Chattanooga, Tenn., the real estate development company that owns ModWash.

Eighteen of the car washes are already open and 35 are under construction, Uhler said.

“I’m working on 15 to 20,” said Mark Zimmerman of Morris Knowles & Associates engineering in Delmont.

ModWash plans to open 100 locations by the end of 2023, according to a July 2020 article in carwash.com.

The facility will be located just to the right of the main entrance of the former Kmart property, according to land development plans presented to the commission, which voted to recommend approval to the township board of supervisors.

The construction of the facility at that location won’t impede development on the rest of the property, Zimmerman said in answer to a question from a commissioner.

“The seller is OK with our layout,” he said.

The property owner is CF of Altoona LLC, township Planning Director Cassandra Schmick said.

The plans shown at the meeting depicted a tight 4,400-square-foot arrangement, with concentric paths for vehicles.

Drivers will enter, show membership credentials or pay for individual washes, head for the conveyor that takes their vehicles through the wash cycle, then arrive at a bank of self-service vacuums, before exiting into an aisle of the main parking lot.

There will be three to five employees, including a manager, on duty from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., when the facility is open, according to Uhler. There will be 15 employees on the payroll, he said.
