The Altoona, an engine crafted and painted at Norfolk Southern’s Juniata Shops, is now in service as part of the company’s Landmark Series.

The locomotive honors its namesake’s rail legacy and is part of the company’s lineup of locomotives that will operate in revenue freight service as well as lead the company’s inspection trains.

Each locomotive in the Landmark Series carries the name of a city that has shaped America’s story and NS railroad’s heritage. In October 2025, the company introduced the first two engines, honoring Atlanta and Birmingham. Altoona marks the third locomotive in the series.

“These locomotives aren’t just machines — they’re growth engines for the U.S. economy,” Norfolk Southern Chief Operating Officer John Orr said in announcing the locomotive series in October. “Each city we highlight is a center of economic activity that strengthens our network and drives commerce across the nation.”

Now in service, the Altoona engine can be spotted anywhere on the Norfolk Southern network, hauling freight or leading the Office Car Special (OCS) train.

Starting at $2.99/week.
