Judge reimposes gag order on Trump

WASHINGTON — The federal judge who reimposed a narrow gag order on Donald Trump in his 2020 election interference case in Washington says one of his social media posts about ex-chief of staff Mark Meadows constituted an “attack.”

Judge Tanya Chutkan on Sunday reimposed an order barring the Republican ex-president from making public comments targeting prosecutors, court staff and potential witnesses.

Prosecutor takes aim at FTX founder

NEW YORK — A prosecutor began cross-examining Sam Bankman-Fried at a trial on Monday, attacking his credibility by highlighting public statements he made before and after the FTX cryptocurrency exchange he founded filed for bankruptcy late last year when it could no longer process withdrawals.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Danielle Sassoon confronted Bankman-Fried with instances in which he’d promised customers that their assets would be safe and that they could demand those assets to be returned at any time.

North Dakota

Lawmaker charged with child sex abuse

BISMARCK — A retired Republican state senator from North Dakota has been charged with traveling to Europe with the intent of paying for sex with a minor and with receiving images depicting child sexual abuse, according to a federal indictment.

Longtime state Sen. Ray Holmberg, 79, was arrested Monday and released after pleading not guilty to the charges in U.S. District Court in Fargo. His trial is set for Dec. 5.

Overnight Russian shelling kills one

KYIV — Russian shells struck residential areas of Ukraine’s southern Kherson region, killing a 91-year-old woman in what a local official described Monday as a terrifying night in the 20-month war that shows no signs of ending.

The overnight shelling set fire to a high-rise apartment building, blew out windows and reduced some apartments to rubble, according to video footage posted by Kherson Gov. Oleksandr Prokudin.

Tropical Storm Pilar leaves 2 dead

SAN SALVADOR — Officials said Monday that heavy rain from Tropical Storm Pilar has already caused two deaths in El Salvador as it meanders off the Pacific coast.

A 24-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman were swept away by swollen streams Sunday in the province of La Union, according to Fermín Pérez, the assistant director of El Salvador’s civil defense office. Pérez said their bodies were found Monday.

5.4 magnitude quake shakes Jamaica

SAN JUAN — A 5.4 magnitude earthquake has hit Jamaica and prompted people to flee buildings amid heavy shaking that knocked out power in some areas.

The tremor caused panic on the island Monday, but the prime minister says there have been no reports of deaths, injuries or serious damage. The U.S. Geological Survey says it occurred at a shallow depth of six miles.
