Somerset Trust donates to EITC at Penn Highlands
JOHNSTOWN -- Somerset Trust Co. has donated $220,000 to the Pennsylvania Highlands Community College Foundation, directing the contribution to the college's Educational Income Tax Credit fund.
The contribution will support the cost of free three-credit dual enrollment courses for eligible high school students in Cambria and Somerset counties, subject to program funding availability. In total, more than 900 students may be impacted by the donation, with participants expected from every high school in Cambria and Somerset counties.
The EITC program allows Somerset Trust and other eligible businesses to invest directly in Penn Highlands' educational initiatives that benefit regional high school students.
The college's ACE Dual Enrollment Program allows eligible high school students to take college courses, earning credits that can be transferred to Penn Highlands. The addition of EITC-supported funding ensures that more students, regardless of financial circumstances, can take advantage of this opportunity.
The college's dual enrollment program reaches approximately 1,800 high school students in Cambria, Somerset and surrounding counties.
The contribution reflects a shared commitment to expand access, reduce student debt and prepare the next generation of learners for college and career success.
Student named 2026 PSAC Scholar-Athlete
KUTZTOWN -- Kutztown University set a new record with 255 student-athletes earning Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete status for the 2025-26 academic year, including Caleb Tryninewski of Hollidaysburg.
KU's 255 honorees this year edged the former record of 252 set in 2020-21. As a department, 58.6% of 435 eligible Golden Bear student-athletes were named PSAC Scholar-Athletes, a 4.6% improvement over 2024-25. It's also the seventh consecutive year that Kutztown has featured 200+ PSAC Scholar-Athletes.
Student-athletes must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 and compete in a PSAC-sponsored sport to be eligible for PSAC Scholar-Athlete recognition.
Student-athletes earn ODAC All-Academic Honors
WINCHESTER, Va. -- Shenandoah University Athletics set a new department record with 366 student-athletes selected to the 2025-26 Old Dominion Athletic Conference's All-Academic list released by the league on July 17.
The Hornets' honorees included Lukas Black of Martinsburg, Caleb Beiswenger of Altoona and Erin Talko of Cresson.
Shenandoah, which bested its previous record of 355 honorees set last year, ranked second in the conference in total honorees, trailing only Washington & Lee (549). To qualify for ODAC All-Academic honors, student-athletes must earn a cumulative 3.25 GPA or higher during the academic year.
A total of 3,308 student-athletes earned ODAC All-Academic honors in 2025-26.
Student interns with PennDOT press office
CLARION -- For Natalie Reynolds, every day as a press office intern with PennDOT brings a new opportunity to inform the public and strengthen the communication skills she's developed at Penn-West Clarion.
A communication major from Fallentimber, Reynolds is spending her internship supporting PennDOT's District 2 communications team. From writing press releases and monitoring media coverage to attending community events and promoting transportation safety, she is gaining firsthand experience in the fast-paced world of public relations.
A graduate of Glendale Junior-Senior High School, Reynolds is president of the Delta Phi Epsilon sorority, the Epsilon Omicron Chapter.
She is also an active member of Clarion's Epsilon Phi chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, and she plays the baritone horn in the Golden Eagle Marching Band.
Her daily responsibilities vary, providing exposure to many aspects of professional communications.
Student part of Pan-Mass Challenge
NEEDHAM, Mass. -- The Pan-Mass Challenge hosted its annual bike-a-thon across Massachusetts this weekend (Aug. 1 and 2), and Mack Rubley from Tyrone was among the more than 6,000 cyclists and 4,000 volunteers participating in the event to raise money for cancer research and care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
The PMC, which raises more money for charity than any other single athletic fundraiser in the world, is aiming to raise more than ever this year, with a fundraising goal of $79 million.
For the 20th consecutive year, 100 percent of every rider-raised dollar will go directly to Dana-Farber, one of the nation's top three hospitals for cancer research and care.
