Students get look at management
EAST STROUDSBURG -- East Stroudsburg University students studying hospitality, recreation, and tourism management recently visited Indian Valley Country Club, in Telford, Pa., for a behind-the-scenes look at the operations of a private member-owned club.
Angela Petrarca of Altoona is a student in the class.
The students, who are currently taking HRTM 261, Club Management, participated in the trip to explore areas of hospitality that are often unfamiliar because private clubs are typically not open to the public.
On April 8, Petrarca also visited Aramark's world headquarters in Philadelphia for a firsthand look at the company's operations and career opportunities.
The visit introduced students to Aramark's wide range of services, including collegiate dining, contract foodservice, entertainment and venue services, and facilities management.
Students learned about the company's structure and culture and explored internship and leadership development opportunities, including the Step Up to Leadership (S2L) and Accelerate to Leadership (A2L) programs. The group also toured Aramark's innovation and research kitchen, visited the employee wellness center and had lunch at the company's employee dining venue, Simple Spoon Marketplace.
Student presents works at events
ANNVILLE -- Jacob Detwiler of Martinsburg was one of the students who presented their scholarly or creative work at Lebanon Valley College's annual Inquiry symposium on April 28. Detwiler presented "Assessing Accessibility: Experiences of Students with Accommodations at LVC" at the event.
Detwiler, a graduate of Central High School, Martinsburg, is pursuing a bachelor of arts in criminal justice at The Valley.
More than 120 undergraduates representing academic departments across campus displayed their work to an audience of faculty, peers, trustees and administrators during the symposium. Student work included original research, scholarship and creative efforts.
Detwiler also presented "Balancing Act: How Age and Work Hours Impact the Mental Health of Health Professionals" as one of more than 30 LVC students who presented their yearlong scholarly research on April 23 at the 43rd Mid-Atlantic Undergraduate Social Research Conference.
Student joins
Phi Kappa Phi
BATON ROUGE, La. -- Jeremy Conrad of Tyrone was recently elected to membership into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society, at Pennsylvania State University.
Conrad is among approximately 20,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year.
Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10% of seniors and 7.5% of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10% of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.
Nursing major presents at fair
BRADFORD -- Olivia Reese, a nursing major from Flinton, presented "Increasing Emergency Preparedness in Cambria County, Pa." during the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford's annual Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Fair on April 12.
The fair is an annual opportunity for Pitt-Bradford students to present the results of their research in a public setting.
Central Penn Esports wins championship
ENOLA -- Central Penn College's Esports Rocket League team has captured its second Division championship title in program history.
The team, composed of standout players Logan Kibler of Hanover, Sam Royer of Altoona and Connor Staub of Leesport, clinched the championship with an overtime victory against Bluffton University (Ohio) in the Playfly Division finals.
IUP celebrates
4.0 graduates
INDIANA, Pa. — The following undergraduate students from Pennsylvania at Indiana University of Pennsylvania completed their studies with a perfect 4.0 grade point average and were honored during IUP's May 10 commencement ceremonies at the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex.
n Gabriella Finn, a hospitality management graduate from Altoona. Daughter of Thomas and Traci Finn, she is a 2021 graduate of Bellwood-Antis High School. She was active in a number of organizations, including the Management Association, serving as treasurer and president; Eta Sigma Delta hospitality society, serving as vice president and president; and treasurer and fundraising chair for Her Campus. She also was treasurer and vice president of the Eberly College of Business Student Advisory Council.
n Katherine Fye, a psychology graduate from DuBois. Daughter of Jennifer Sweka-Fye and Mr. and Mrs. David Fye of Indiana, she is a 2020 graduate of DuBois Area High School. She was a member of Psi Chi honor society, the Psychology Club and the National Society of Leadership and Success.
n Amanda Gwinn, a criminology graduate from James Creek. Daughter of Allen and Heather Gwinn, she is a 2021 graduate of Huntingdon Area High School. She is the recipient of the Edward C. Keller Scholarship and the Sutton Scholarship. She was a member of the women's track and field team, was vice president of the women's club soccer team, was a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success and Alpha Phi Sigma National Criminal Justice Honor Society.
