Student recognized with Frostburg State University Honors
FROSTBURG, Md -- Alivia Melius of Saxton was among the graduate and undergraduate students recognized at Frostburg State University's Honors Convocation on May 22.
Melius, who received departmental honors in English, is a student with high marks who left her rural hometown to study in Tokyo.
As a student who is visually impaired, she faced extra challenges that she learned to overcome. She has since used her unique perspective to inspire students like her to travel the world. As an ambassador for the Knowledge Exchange Institute and student representative for FSU's Center for International Education, Melius has guided students in finding their ideal programs abroad. She has served as treasurer of Delta Alpha Pi International Honor Society for students with disabilities and Sigma Tau Delta International Honor Society for English majors.
She has advocated on Capitol Hill for rural education reform, and she has tutored elementary-school students in reading, math and science. At FSU, she has been a writing tutor and an assistant in the Student Support Services Office. Melius is pursuing a career in international education.
IUP honors students graduating with perfect grade-point average
INDIANA, Pa. -- Indiana University of Pennsylvania honored 1,566 graduates -- including two Blair County students receiving bachelor's degrees and graduating with perfect 4.0 grade point averages -- during commencement ceremonies on May 11 at IUP's Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex.
Blair County 4.0 graduates are:
n Iris Kauffman, an art history and studio art major in the Cook Honors College from Altoona. Daughter of Jason Kauffman and Crystal Conrad-Kauffman, she received the Board of Governors Scholarship, the Ralph Reynolds Art Scholarship and earned a Certificate of Multicultural Awareness.
She participated in the Foreign Language Diversity and Inclusion Series, SQUAD Art Studio, was a member of the Kipp Gallery Committee and volunteered for the American Red Cross and the IUP Haven Project.
n Elizabeth Haffling, a hotel, restaurant, tourism and event management major from Martinsburg. Daughter of Greg and Amy Haffling, she is a 2014 graduate of the Spring Cove School District. She received the Statler Scholarship, awarded based on academic excellence, character and commitment to the industry. She was a member of Eta Sigma Delta hospitality honors fraternity, Women in Business organization, the Society for Human Resources Management organization, Meeting Professionals International and the Club Management Association of America. She volunteered at the Indiana Free Library.
Haffling completed IUP's Academy of Culinary Arts certificate program in 2015 and the Baking and Pastry certificate program in 2016, graduating from both programs with high honors.
