Student part of ‘New Leadership’

LORETTO — Saint Francis University student Makenna Murphy of Altoona participated in a Women and Politics “New Leadership” program the week of June 4-9 at Chatham University, Pittsburgh.

Murphy was selected to be among a diverse group of young women from two- to four-year schools across Pennsylvania to attend the program.

The goal is to open previously unimagined possibilities for college women and encourage them to break down barriers that have traditionally kept women from political life. New Leadership prepares women leaders for the 21st century, ready to step forward with vision, courage and the skills to meet the challenges ahead.

Participants become part of a network of current and future women leaders who share a commitment to making a difference in their communities.

During the weeklong program, Murphy and the other young women traveled to the state’s capital in Harrisburg to meet, interact and network with several Pennsylvania legislators. During this trip, Murphy had the honor meeting and talking with Pennsylvania Speaker of the House Joanna McClinton.

Student interns at UPMC Altoona

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Phillip Carbaugh, a senior criminal justice major at Bob Jones University, is completing an internship with UPMC Altoona.

A resident of Altoona, Carbaugh shadows security officers as they provide protection at a local hospital and observes them as they perform their duties. He assists staff in the morgue as they inventory and release corpses.

“I believe that as criminal justice students, we need to broaden our views of security and order than what we normally think of. This internship at the UPMC Altoona Hospital has shown how a hospital can be even more dangerous than one could realize and how vulnerable we are as a society in places that we usually expect to be treated better,” said Carbaugh.

“This internship has helped me realize that we need more security now than ever in a broader scope than what we think if we are to ensure a better future for the next generation of Americans.”

College Fair set for Sept. 19

JOHNSTOWN — The 21st annual Cambria County College Fair will be held from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, inside the main gym of Pennsylvania Highlands Community College’s Richland campus.

This event, which is sponsored and hosted by Pennsylvania Highlands, is open to students, parents and the public, who are looking to further their education or trade.

“This is a great opportunity for local high school juniors and seniors, plus anyone looking to find a new school or career, to come and see what is available,” said Hannah Ross, admissions specialist at Pennsylvania Highlands.

“There will be a lot of vendors to talk to, with a widespread variety of representatives coming from outside the state as well. There will be many chances to gain knowledge from different perspectives at this event.”

More than 50 representatives will likely be appearing at the fair, including four-year universities, technical schools, business colleges, cosmetology schools and universities, branches of the military, local businesses, and more, giving everyone who attends an opportunity to find and discover the many educational and career opportunities that are right in their own backyard.

The representatives, which hail from Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia and Maryland along with Pennsylvania, will meet with and assist guests regarding their educational and career needs.

The college fair’s mission is to promote higher education and future opportunities to not only high school students and their families, but to the public as well.
