Villanova student named
to National Honor Society
Amelia Morning of Altoona has been inducted into the National Honor Society in Villanova’s Zeta Chapter of Alpha Epsilon Delta.
This National Honor Society at Villanova was established in 1968 and is for Premedical and Health students. It is an honor bestowed in recognition of superior scholastic achievement.
She also is on Villanova University’s dean’s list for the fall semester.
Amelia’s parents are Rick and Mary-Margaret Morning of Altoona. Amelia graduated from Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School, Altoona.
She is pursing a bachelor of science degree in chemistry with a Japanese minor and a theater minor.
Pennsylvania Highlands
to hold open houses on May 1
JOHNSTOWN — Pennsylvania Highlands Community College will hold an Admissions & Athletics Open House at its facilities on Monday, May 1. Attendees and their guests may choose to attend one of two sessions at either 2:30 or 5:30 p.m.
Individuals will learn about academic programs and coursework, transfer options and athletics. Information on student life and financial aid will also be presented. Faculty and current students will discuss their personal experiences.
Prospective students will be eligible to win a 2023-24 tuition voucher, good for a $250 discount, if they complete a survey while in attendance.

Altoona graduate earns
honor society recognition
CHESTER — Michael J. Pennington of Altoona was recently inducted into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi at Widener University for earning a 4.0 cumulative GPA.
Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest and most selective multidisciplinary collegiate honor society.
Pennington is a doctoral candidate at Widener, where he is slated to graduate in May 2023 with a doctor of education degree in higher education leadership.
Student participates in Findlay
art and design juried exhibition
FINDLAY, Ohio — Sarah Stanley of Altoona is participating in the 2023 Student Art and Design Juried Exhibition at the University of Findlay through April 28.
Stanley is showcasing creativity in photography/digital titled “Little Star.”
Categories include visual fundamentals, design in crafts and intro to digital design; drawing and mixed media; sculpture; visual communication; ceramics; painting; film photography; digital photography; design; and printmaking.
Nearly 280 pieces were entered and 80 of them were accepted into the show. The awards judge for this year’s exhibition is University of Findlay alumna, Megan Talbert.
Free and open to the public, artwork will be displayed from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily in the Dudley and Mary Marks Lea Gallery in the Virginia B. Gardner Fine Arts Pavilion.
Altoona native joins PennWest University leadership group
EDINBORO — Sonia Yost of Altoona is serving as a student member of the Pennsylvania Western University Council of Trustees.
Yost, a student at the PennWest Edinboro campus, is a sophomore majoring in English literature with a minor in philosophy.
The Council of Trustees consists of 15 members, including three students from each campus – California, Clarion and Edinboro. The Council of Trustees advises the university president on issues and initiatives that are important to the university’s success.
Yost is expected to be a member of the council until spring 2025.
At Edinboro, Yost is involved in the Honors College, Highland Ambassadors and the President’s Leadership Academy. She works as an academic aide for the Office of Students with Disabilities and also for the Campus Life office, where her duties include event planning.
Golden Eagles recognized
as scholar-athletes at Clarion
CLARION — Members of every Golden Eagles athletics program gathered in Gemmell multipurpose room Jan. 26 for the Bob Carlson Scholar-Athlete Luncheon, with a greater proportion of student-athletes than ever before earning recognition.
All told, there were 251 names — 66% of the student-athlete population on campus — on this year’s Clarion scholar-athlete list. The latter number represents the highest percentage of scholar-athletes in the 29-year history of the scholar-athlete luncheon.
Area students among those recognized were:
n Secondary education, social studies major Aidan Palilla of Altoona (football)
n Secondary education, mathematics major McLain Alt of Clearfield (women’s golf)
n Medical imaging sciences major Antonia Marie Fenice of DuBois (track and field)
n Marketing major Peyton James Maurer of DuBois (football)
n Accounting major Katelyn G Shaffer of Hyndman (soccer)
n Computer science major Isaac Jonathan Wagner of Northern Cambria (football)
n Biology major Parker Jospeh Matson of Philipsburg (football)
To earn scholar-athlete status for the year, a student-athlete must have either achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher or recorded two consecutive semesters of a 3.2 grade point average or higher in the spring and fall terms of 2022.
Freshmen and new transfer students who achieved a 3.2 grade point average or higher in the fall term of 2022 also qualified.
Student participates on women’s track, field team at The Valley
ANNVILLE — Darrian Berkheimer of Altoona is one of more than 200 student-athletes who competed for the Flying Dutchmen during the winter 2022-23 season at Lebanon Valley College.
Berkheimer, a graduate of Altoona Area Senior High School, is pursuing a bachelor of science in exercise science at The Valley.
Berkheimer was a member of the women’s track and field team.
The team finished fourth at Middle Atlantic Conference Indoor Championships with five All-Conference performances by four student-athletes and one relay.
