Two celebrated singer-songwriters will reunite on one stage at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 2, for a concert at Pine Grove Hall, 101 E. Pine Grove Road, Pine Grove Mills. Laurelyn Dossett and Bet Williams are celebrating the release of new albums this year and the revival of a decades-long friendship that began as college roommates at Penn State in the 1980s. After graduating, the former roommates followed different paths. Laurelyn returned to her Southern roots in North Carolina, raising a family while building an acclaimed career writing and producing music theater pieces, performing on the Americana scene and contributing songs to Grammy Award-winning recordings. Bet took to the road, performing at festivals and venues across the United States before touring extensively throughout Europe. The Iron Bridge Dinner Theater is returning to the Bell Mansion in Bellwood to present “The Savannah Sipping Society,” a popular, laugh-out-loud comedy about four Southern women, an unlikely chance meeting and weekly happy hours to reclaim their lives, find friendship, and embrace second chances. Two student-led short films are set for debut at 2 p.m. Friday, May 2, in Eisenhower Auditorium State College. The free, public screening will feature the Penn State student films “Earning a Living,” a dark comedy written and directed by Jackson Bonds; and “Muse,” a psychological drama written and directed by Rachel Traub.
The Blair Creators Festival will be back from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 2, downtown Altoona and in the Heritage Plaza. The event will feature artisan vendors, food and drinks, hands-on activities and more. Admission is free.
VFW Post 8685 will host its annual Cancer Benefit and Dance at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 2. Doors open at 5 p.m. Dinner will be pasta, meatballs, salad and a roll. At 8 p.m. the dance band, “Ages” will perform. The event will feature a basket raffle, door prizes, a lottery board, bake sale and more.

Compass Inn Museum, Laughlintown, will open Sunday, May 3, for Ligonier Valley Museum Day. The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art (SAMA) will present a children’s program to accompany the special exhibition, “Our History is Your History — Works by Jewish Artists in the SAMA Permanent Collection” highlighting prominent Jewish artists represented in its Permanent Collection. Registration is encouraged but not required for these free programs. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Parents do not need to purchase tickets and are encouraged to view the exhibits while their children are participating in the workshop. The Symbols of Meaning: The Art of Jewish Tradition Workshop will be a hands-on workshop that will introduce children to the rich visual language of Judaism through symbols such as the Menorah, Star of David, and Hamsa and will also include Pomegranate themed artwork. The Women’s Club of Altoona will host their annual fundraiser, Night at the Races, on Saturday, May 16. ArtsAltoona will host a Plein Air Painting event Friday, May 22 and Saturday, May 23, with a Wet Sale on Sunday, May 24. The event will offer artists the opportunity to create original works outdoors, capturing the natural and urban landscapes of the Altoona area in real time. Participating artists are required to pre-register, with a registration fee of $35. Artists should report to the ArtsAltoona Center from 8 to 10 a.m. Friday, May 22 to check in. Painting will take place throughout the day on Friday and Saturday at locations of the artists’ choosing within the designated area.
