Penn State Altoona students volunteer in community

2 min read

Nearly 200 Penn State Altoona students recently participated in Voluntoona, a community service project that pairs students with local nonprofit organizations

for a morning of volunteer work.

Students volunteered at 19 organizations, including Temple Beth Israel, Mending Hearts Animal Rescue, Bellwood-Antis Public Library, The Door, The Hope Center, ArtsAltoona, Altoona Mission Central HUB, the City of Altoona, Altoona Community Theatre and others.

All 19 of Penn State Altoona's Division III athletic teams participated, along with student organizations including Club Equestrian, the Student Government Association and the Chinese Student Association.

Since Voluntoona began in 2010, about 2,800 students have contributed 7,900 hours of community service.

"Voluntoona was about much more than volunteer hours," said John Carey, assistant director of athletics. "It was about service, leadership, community, and representing Penn State Altoona in a way that made all of us proud."

The event began with remarks from Altoona Mayor Matthew Pacifico and Dani Fry, Penn State Altoona director of student affairs.

"It was great to see so many students wanting to give back to the community and get involved," Pacifico said.

"We're so grateful for them and their willingness to make a difference."

Voluntoona was organized by Donna Pearlman, assistant director of Student Leadership and Involvement; Keith Orwig, recreation program specialist; and Fry.
