Antoinette Thompson, 12, Altoona, a school safety patrol member, received a Gold Lifesaving Medal from U.S. Secretary of Transportation William T. Coleman Jr. and the AAA for saving the life of a fellow student. The ceremony was held at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

The Hollidaysburg YMCA (1866) and Tyrone YMCA (1870) were celebrating the 150th anniversary of the parent Young Men's Christian Association, founded in London in 1844 and moved to New York in 1851.

The annual Labor Day Parade was held in downtown Altoona with the Altoona Area High School marching band with baton and flag twirlers leading electrical workers, pipe fitters, steel workers and painters union members marching.
