50 years ago: A 900,000-gallon water tank -- 72 feet high and 46 feet around -- was erected by Altoona Enterprises Inc. at the William W. Ward Industrial Park in Greenfield Township.
25 years ago: Altoona Curve Marketing Director James Gregory was leaving the Curve after four years to join the staff of state Sen. Robert Jubelirer. He had previously spent 12 years as a sports broadcaster for WJAC-TV.
10 years ago: Local funeral directors Jon Russin of Bellwood and Bob Jones of Altoona gave an interview to the Altoona Mirror about their recovery efforts at the scene of the 9/11 hijacked plane crash in Shanksville that killed 40 people. Russin was a member of a state disaster recovery team.

On Sept. 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 people were killed as 19 al-Qaida hijackers seized control of four jetliners, sending two of the planes into New York's World Trade Center, one into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and the fourth into a field in western Pennsylvania. It remains the deadliest terror attack in history.
