The Hollidaysburg Area Public Library has announced its activities for October.
The library will be closed Monday, Oct. 12, in observance of Indigenous Peoples' Day. The library will close at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, due to the Hollidaysburg Halloween Parade.
n Canasta and Mah Jongg games are held at 11 a.m. Mondays. Beginners are welcome.
n Maker Mondays are held all day Mondays in the Children's Room. A station will be set up with a different craft, challenge or activity each week.
n Storytime and Craft will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Fridays. Children must be accompanied by a caregiver.
n A special Composting StoryTime will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, and Friday, Oct. 9. A.J. Kurtz from IRC Recycling will join for stories and hands-on activities.
n Dance, Sing and Play will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursdays, Oct. 8, 15, 22 and 29. Need to get your wiggles out? Dance, sing, shake the parachute and some shaky eggs too.
n Needlework & Arts Group is held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays. Bring your own materials and projects for this crafting club intended for adults.
n Twisted Stitchers meet from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays. Bring your own project, yarn and hooks; spend time with other crafters.
n Lego Club will meet from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Fridays. Bring your imagination; the library will supply the Legos. This is intended for school-aged children.
n Paws to Read will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3. Meet and read to pets from the Central PA Humane Society. Children ages 5 and up are welcome with their caregivers.
n Altoona/Blair County Photo Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5. The Photo Society gathers to discuss a variety of topics, including taking and editing pictures. Learn something new with any type of camera or smart phone. New members are welcome. Call 814-207-1479 with questions.
n Pumpkinfest will be held Saturday, Oct.10, in downtown Hollidaysburg. Join Miss Pennie for Storytime in front of the Courthouse at 10 a.m., and be sure to visit the library's tent for a craft.
n Highland Hall Guided Tours will be held at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, presented by Hollidaysburg Heritage Guided Tours. Tickets are $12 each. Each session is limited to 30 people. Advance tickets are recommended. Stop by or call the library at 814-695-5961. All proceeds benefit the library.
n The Friends of the Library will hold a used book sale at the library Oct. 21, 22 and 23. The preview sale for members of the Friends will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20. Sale hours for Wednesday and Thursday are 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday sale hours are 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. A special $5-a- bag day will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday and run through Friday.
n Women Writers Book Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13. October's book will be "Her Smoke Rose Up Forever" by James Tiptree.
n Inspirational Book Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8. This month's book selection is "True Light" by Terri Blackstock.
n Best of Times Book Club will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, to discuss "The Berry Pickers" by Amanda Peters. The club will have a second meeting on Thursday, Oct. 29, to discuss "The Nickel Boys" by Colson Whitehead. All are welcome.
n Master Gardeners' "Three Sisters Gardening" will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13. This workshop will introduce participants to the art and science of growing the three sisters: corn, beans and squash. Email blairmg@psu.edu or contact the library for more information.
