The Altoona Area Public Library has announced its programs for October.
– Kooman & Associates presents Storytellers on Stage featuring bestselling author Jeff Shaara at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, at the Historic Mishler Theatre. Tickets are $30 plus a $2 online processing fee and are available at the Mishler Theatre box office and mishlertheatre.org. Proceeds benefit the Altoona Area Public Library.
– The Friends of the Altoona Area Public Library will hold a used book sale from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31. A $5-per-bag sale will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2.
Friends members can attend a presale from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29. Books, puzzles, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks and games will be available. Cash or checks only. Proceeds benefit the library.
– Mahjong Club will meet from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29. Pinochle Club will meet from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 7, 14, 21 and 28. Both are open to adult patrons, and registration is not required.
– Chess Club will meet from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29. Meet at the front tables on the first floor. Registration is not required. Those younger than 16 must be accompanied by a legal guardian.
– The Women's Community Art Group will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1. The free open studio is for women 18 and older and includes art materials. Participants may bring their own projects. Registration is required at 814-946-0417, ext. 125.
– First Friday Fun will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2, for children 3 and younger. The program will feature sensory stations and may be held outdoors, weather permitting. Registration is required at 814-946-0417, ext. 123.
– Super Saturday: Going Batty will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, for children ages 5 to 12. Participants will make an origami bat bookmark. Registration is required at 814-946-0417, ext. 123.
– Fiber Fun will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3. Participants can bring their favorite fiber crafts, with experienced crafters available to assist beginners. Registration is not required.
– Free Family Movie Matinees will feature "Halloweentown" at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, and "Halloweentown II -- Kalabar's Revenge" at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10. Both movies will be shown in the library theater. Registration is not required.
– The Altoona Symphony Orchestra will introduce children ages 3 to 6 to the symphony at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5, through music exploration and hands-on activities. Registration is required at 814-946-0417, ext. 123.
– Paws 2 Read will be held at 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, in the Youth Room. Children can practice reading to pets from the local humane society. Registration is required at 814-946-0417, ext. 123.
– Brain Games: Logic Links will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, for children 5 and older. The program features logic puzzles, memory challenges and strategy games. Registration is required at 814-946-0417, ext. 123.
– A teen gaming club will meet from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 6, 13, 20 and 27, in partnership with the Video Game Clubs of America. Activities include tabletop and card games and Nintendo Switch. Registration is required at 814-946-0417, ext. 125.
– Sample Food Through the Ages will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6. The program will explore the history of vampires and include a sample of Romanian polenta. Registration, a library card and a $3 fee are required. Call 814-946-0417, ext. 125.
– Ahh Brain Freeze for Teens: A Halloween Night will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7. Teens will solve a Breakout EDU challenge while enjoying Shirley Temple slushies. Registration is required at 814-946-0417, ext. 125.
– LEGO Club will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, and Monday, Oct. 19. The theme is haunted houses. The program is for children 4 and older. Monthly registration and a library card are required. Call 814-946-0417, ext. 123.
– Taylor McCoy will present "The Extinction of Dinosaurs" at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, in the library theater. The program will examine the extinction of dinosaurs and its impact on the modern world. Registration is not required.
– Intro to Spanish: Day of the Dead will be held Friday, Oct. 9, for children ages 3 to 6 at 10:30 a.m. and children 6 and older at 1:30 p.m. The program will introduce Spanish through Dia de los Muertos traditions. Registration is required at 814-946-0417, ext. 123.
– Folded Book Art: Candy Corn Witches will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, for children ages 6 to 12. Participants will turn used books into candy corn witches. Registration is required at 814-946-0417, ext. 123.
– The Friends of the Altoona Area Public Library will hold a Puzzle Swap at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13. Participants can bring a gently used puzzle with all pieces and exchange it for another. Puzzles must be in good condition and participants should bring only puzzles they are willing to give away.
– Marvelous Machines: Just Bleat It will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, for students in grades one through five. Participants will explore engineering through fairy tales by designing a bridge for a family of goats. Registration is required at 814-946-0417, ext. 123.
– The Friends of the Library book club will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17. The featured book is "The River We Remember" by William Kent Krueger. RSVP to SarahAAPL@yahoo.com. Friends membership is $10 annually.

– Escape Room: Zombie Outbreak -- Save the City will run Monday, Oct. 19, through Saturday, Oct. 24, with various time slots. Groups of up to four can participate. Adults need a BCLS card, and an adult must accompany groups made up only of minors. Registration is required at 814-946-0417, ext. 125.
– Bailey's Brigade will meet at 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, in partnership with the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society. The program for children ages 3 to 12 will include animals and activities about compassion, responsibility and pet ownership. Registration is required at 814-946-0417, ext. 123.
– Once Upon a Grown Up will meet at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23. The monthly gathering gives caregivers an opportunity to socialize and maintain connections from storytime programs. New caregivers are welcome. Registration is not required.
– The Friends of the Library will present Ghost Stories with Kirk Weixel at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, in the library theater. Weixel will share ghost stories from Central Pennsylvania and beyond. The program is recommended for teens and adults. Registration is not required.
– The AAPL Shelf Indulgence Adult Book Club will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, in the library board room. Coffee and tea will be available. Participants should bring their own mug. The book is "The Shadow of War" by Jeff Shaara. Registration is required at 814-946-0417, ext. 125.
– Charge Into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, in the library theater with the Altoona Fire Department. The program includes stories, fire safety information and a fire truck. The program is free; preregistration is encouraged at 814-946-0417, ext. 123.
– Halloweek Take-and-Makes will be available beginning at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, through Saturday, Oct. 31, while supplies last. Children ages 5 to 12 can pick up a different Halloween craft each day. No registration is required. Crafts will include mummies, bats, eyeball flowers, witches' brooms, spiders and ghosts.
– Pokemon TCG Day for Teens will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28. Participants can learn strategy, game play and deck building. Starter decks will be available, and instruction will be provided. Registration is not required.
– The library offers free weekly storytime programs for families with children ages 1 to 6. Programs are designed for caregivers and children to enjoy together. Registration is required at 814-946-0417, ext. 123.
