Ty Halerz of Altoona was one of 42 high school students selected to attend the Appalachian STEM Academy from July 11-24 at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
The two-week residential program was designed to provide hands-on experience in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
During the academy, Halerz had the unique opportunity to be mentored by scientists from Oak Ridge National Laboratory and other STEM experts.
The program is sponsored by the Appalachian Regional Commission and managed by Oak Ridge Associated Universities.
Halerz, a student at Bishop Guilfoyle Academy, participated in guided group research projects at ORNL, explored real-world applications of STEM concepts and gained exposure to career pathways.
The program culminated in group presentations, where participants shared their research findings and project outcomes with peers, mentors and program leaders.
Fully funded by ARC, the Appalachian STEM Academy is complimentary for all participants and is also open to middle school students and high school teachers, broadening its impact across the Appalachian region.
"The Appalachian STEM Academy is an exceptional program that identifies and nurtures future STEM leaders from across the 13-state Appalachian region," said Jennifer Tyrell, associate manager at ORAU.
