Folded book art, brain games are among the offerings
Altoona Area Public Library, 1600 Fifth Ave., has announced its events and activities for September.

n In partnership with the Video Game Clubs of America, the library will host a gaming club from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29. From tabletop board games, card games, Nintendo Switch and more, each week will be something different to enjoy with friends. To register, call 814-946-0417, ext. 125.
n Sample Food through the Ages at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, in the library. Experience a historical presentation on the food topic for the month. Samples and recipes will be given out at the end of the program. This month come try two Temperance Era Soft Punches. Registration, a library card and a $3 fee are required. n Pinochle Club will meet from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 in the library. All adult patrons are welcome to play. No registration is required.
n Ahh Brain Freeze for Teens will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2. Teens are invited to join us to break out from Mr. Lemoncello's Library from Breakout EDU while enjoying slushies. Students will try to solve the puzzles, riddles or questions. Slushies will contain pineapple juice, lemonade concentrate, lemon/lime flavoring, blue food coloring and Sprite. No registration is required.
n Mahjong Club will meet from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 3, 10, 17 and 24 in the library. All adult patrons are welcome to play. No registration is required.
n Chess Club will meet from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 3, 10, 17 and 24. All are welcome to play. Meet at the front tables on the first floor. No registration is necessary. Anyone under the age of 16 needs to be accompanied by their legal guardian.
n Women's Community Art Group will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3. The Women's Community Art Group is an Open Art Studio where women can create art of their choice. There will be a variety of art materials available for use and participants may also bring a project they are currently working on. This is a time for relaxation, creative expression and connection. This free program is for women ages 18 and older and will be instructed by Elaine Baney, an art therapist and educator with more than 20 years experience instructing art. n All ages are welcome to the Friends of the AAPL Puzzle Swap at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8. All puzzles should be in gently used condition with no missing pieces.
n Homeschool Hub: Cellular Showdown will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10. For school-age children: It's plants versus animals in the smallest showdown you will ever see. Explore some of the differences and similarities between these two groups as we learn how to operate microscopes and make wet-mount slides. n The Rainy Day Escape will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12. A rainy day turns into an adventure when two kids' doodles come alive. After watching this short, magical video, children ages 4-12 will dream up their own rainy‑day story and bring it to life with imagination and art. Register by calling 814-946-0417, ext. 123.
n Fiber Fun will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12. Join Kneedle Knerds United for some fiber fun. Bring your favorite fiber crafts. Experienced crafters may be available to help you get started. No registration is needed.
n Bring the whole family for the library's Free Family Movie Matinee at noon Saturday, Sept. 12, in the library theater. "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole" will be shown. No registration is necessary.
n Folded Book Art Owls will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12. Owl enthusiasts are invited to this fun-filled crafting session where children ages 6-12 will learn to transform old books into charming great horned owls. Call 814-946-0417, ext. 123, to register.

n Marvelous Machines: Saving Bacon for Grades 1-5 will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15. Take a closer look at the engineering in some favorite fairy tales. n The Friends of the Library will host its monthly book club at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, in the library. The book for the month is "The God of the Woods" by Liz Moore. n Pokemon TCG Day for Teens will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23. Learn strategy, game sense and deck building all while taking yourself to victory. Starter decks will be available to borrow, and instruction provided to jump right into the action. No registration is required.
n Once Upon a Grown Up will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 25. Storytime may have ended for the littles in your life, but the friendships you have created have not. Join us monthly for this relaxed gathering for caregivers to stay connected, share conversation and continue the community that began during storytimes. Whether you are looking to catch up, meet new people or simply enjoy a morning together, you're invited to keep the circle going. New caregivers are welcome. Registration is not required.

n Bailey's Brigade will meet at 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28. Bailey's Brigade invites families to join a friendly "pack" where being kind to animals isn't rough at all. Through a partnership with the Central PA Humane Society, the group will welcome guest speakers, introduce children ages 3-12 to real animals and offer hands-on activities that teach compassion, responsibility and what it means to be a thoughtful pet owner or friend to animals. n Brain Games: Hoppers will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28. Join Ms. Clarissa for this session of Brain Games featuring Hoppers, a peg solitaire jumping game. This program offers school-age children ages 5 and up a fun, hands-on opportunity to develop critical thinking, problem-solving and teamwork skills through logic puzzles, memory challenges and strategy games.
