Kiwanis to recognize local developer
The Kiwanis Club of Altoona will present Jeff Long with the Distinguished Citizen Award at its Installation and Awards Banquet on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at the Blair County Convention Center.
This award, established in 1999, is given to a person who was born, raised, moved to or lives in the Altoona area and has made major contributions to the betterment of society and who has significantly advanced the Altoona area through endeavors in the commonwealth, nation or worldwide. Long has put his skills and resources to work by constructing projects that have directly benefited the area. He has supported countless charitable and nonprofit organizations. He believes in giving back to the communities that have supported him.

AFSCME Retirees 8306 to meet Sept. 2
The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Retirees Subchapter 8306 will meet at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, at the Union Hall on Patch Way Road. The executive board will meet at 12:30 p.m.

Allegheny Chorale sets fall season
Allegheny Chorale will begin rehearsals for its fall season at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Tyrone Alliance Church, 2103 Adams Ave., Tyrone.
Anyone with a love for singing is invited to become a part of Allegheny Chorale. There are no auditions or tryouts required for membership.
Rehearsals are held every Tuesday evening, and new members are welcome to join during the first two weeks of rehearsals. Membership dues are $20 per season.
The chorale's fall season will culminate with two Christmas concerts, scheduled for Dec. 6 in Altoona and Dec. 8 in Tyrone.
Allegheny Chorale is under the direction of Deborah Estright. Karen Mayhew is assistant director, and accompanists are Anna Myers and Susan Broadbent.

Railway employees to meet Wednesday
The National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, at Prime Sirloin Buffet.
NARVRE is the only chartered national organization whose sole purpose is to protect pension rights.
All retired, veteran and present employees (and their spouses) are invited to attend the meeting of NARVRE Unit 173, Altoona. Members and nonmembers are welcome.

Blair school retirees to meet Tuesday
The Blair County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees will meet at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, at Marzoni's in Duncansville.
Donations will be collected for the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home. New members are encouraged to attend.
Patton car show to be held Sept. 6
The Patton Fire Company No. 1 will sponsor a car show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, at Patton Park. Cars, trucks and motorbikes are welcome.
This will be a judged event with trophies awarded.
There will also be food, games, vendors, music by DJ Wild Willie, 50/50 and a basket auction. The swimming pool will also be open, weather-dependent. Proceeds from the basket auction will benefit the Patton Park.

Auditions set for 'Christmas Carol'
The Playhouse at McConnellstown will hold auditions for its production of "A Christmas Carol" at 11680 Raystown Road. Auditions for children ages 8 to 17 and adults ages 18+ will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13.
The performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 20, 21, 27 and 28 and 2 p.m. Nov. 21, 22, 28 and 29.
Parents and adult cast members (ages 16 and up) are strongly encouraged to attend set build sessions throughout the production run. Assistance is required to construct the set, perform building maintenance and decorate for the holiday season.
Organizers are also looking for production volunteers, stage crew, concessions, front of house staff and parking assistance.

AHS Class of 1960 to meet Tuesday
The Altoona High School Class of 1960 will meet at noon Tuesday, Sept. 1, in the back room at Perkins Restaurant on Pleasant Valley Boulevard.
Classmates and guests are invited. The group meets on the first Tuesday of each month.
