Somerset County will host a week of remembrance, patriotism and community celebration as residents and visitors gather for five days of events commemorating two historic milestones: America's 250th anniversary and the 25th anniversary of the events at Flight 93.
From Wednesday, Aug. 5, through Sunday, Aug. 9, community organizations, first responders, musicians and volunteers have partnered to present a series of events honoring courage, sacrifice and unity.
Events are free and open to the public.
Events begin with an opening ceremony at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, at the Somerset Area High School athletic field. The U.S. Marine Corps Silent Drill Team will be featured, along with a military flyover, combined community bands and more.
Aug. 6 events begin at 10:30 a.m. with the Pennsylvania Fallen Firefighters Memorial Dedication. Other events will be held beginning at 6 p.m. on the lawn at the Laurel Arts Dressler Center, where former Pittsburgh Steeler Brett Kiesel will be available for photos; no autographs.
From 1 to 9 p.m. Aug. 7, events will be held at the Somerset Historical Center.
The Uptown Somerset Community Celebration will be held Aug. 8 with a firefighters' Battle of the Barrel, antique and farmers markets, along with family and children's activities at Union Street Playground. The firefighters parade is set for 3 p.m. A drone and fireworks show is at
9 p.m., launched from the Somerset Area High School.
A community sunrise worship service will be held Aug. 9 at Somerset Lake. Coffee and donuts available at 6:30 a.m., followed by the service at 7 a.m.
