50 years ago: 1976

The Altoona Recreation Commission sponsored a trip to Story Book Forest and Idlewild Park in Ligonier for kids from all the playgrounds in Altoona and five buses were needed to transport the 250 children who responded. Carole Bartley, Barbara Allen and Estelle Pappas were adult supervisors.

25 years ago: 2001

More than 100 state policemen and State College Borough police were on hand as the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts ended in State College. There were riots at two of the last three festivals, one causing more than $100,000 in damages and the other resulting in at least 17 arrests.

10 years ago: 2016

Kenneth E. Wyland, 87, Antis Township, a longtime city editor at the Altoona Mirror Newspaper, died July 14. Mirror reporters had won many awards during his tenure. He was a U.S. Army veteran who served during the Korean War.
