Women’s club recognizes student artists

This spring, the Women’s Club of Altoona recognized outstanding art students from Altoona Area High and Bishop Guilfoyle Academy.

The club has been awarding high school art students for more than 60 years. Club president Barbara Kooman introduced the teachers who, in turn, introduced their winning students. The students displayed their artwork and spoke of the inspiration and execution.

From AAHS, Kathryn Curry’s winning students, all of whom were studying acrylic painting, were Lilly Stahlman, 11th grade; Carmen Serrano, 10th grade; and Valerie Grimminger, 11th grade.

Ron Bowser from AAHS recognized Aubrie McClellan, ninth grade, for her work in Tempura painting. Bowser’s other students, all seniors, had created jewelry: Gianna Bernazzoli, Ella Albright and Grace Long.

Olivia Gennaro introduced Milena Barr, 11th grade, who won for her drawing. She also introduced three winning seniors: Broke Dalby, (3D Art), Rylan Cagle (Drawing) and Mattie Baker, (Mixed Media).

From BG, Emily Altmanshofer recognized her winning students: Maivi Do, 10th grade (Graphite); Harper Walk, 10th grade (Colored Pencil Collage); and Giada Tomchick, 10th grade (Colored Pencil).

Anna Shrift introduced her students: Mary Haigh, 10th grade (Ink and Watercolor); Adrian Louis Diaz Marlin, 12th grade, (Charcoal); and Rebekka Adams, 12th grade, (Colored pencil).

Included in the Art Awards Committee were club women Kit Dangler, Mary K DeLeo, Maureen Kirsch, Sharlene Kirsch and Deborah Thomas.
