Bellwood library sets programs for June
Bellwood-Antis Public Library has scheduled programs for June.
n The “Unearth a Story Summer Reading Program” begins in June. Register children at https://forms.gle/9SwT9WvC5gVDeHw1A or register in person during library hours. Children registered can earn prizes for tracking their reading progress throughout the summer.
n A representative from PA CareerLink-Blair County will be at the library from 1 to 3 p.m. every Tuesday. The representative can help you apply for jobs, update your resume and navigate the Careerlink website. From 3 to 4:30 p.m., the library hosts the Hub, Careerlink of Blair County’s afterschool program for teens. Teens will learn job-ready skills via fun activities, mock interviews, resume games, meet-ups with local businesses and free snacks. Any student in grades 6-12 is welcome.
n The library will present a PAWS to Read session from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 13. Kids will meet and read to an adoptable cat from the Central PA Humane Society. This program is for children ages 5 and up. A parent or caregiver must stay with their child during the program.
n From 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 15, through Friday, June 19, kids in grade 3 nad up and teens are invited to learn the fundamentals of sequential storytelling and how it applies to to comic strips, manga and graphic novels with local cartoonist Brian Middleton (author of Poiko: Quests & Stuff and Wulfborne). The course begins with creating three-panel comic strips and works up to creating a multipage story. Registration is free. To sign up, email bellwoodantispublic

n Altoona Symphony Orchestra presents an introduction to the orchestra and conductor at a special program at the library at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 23. This program is geared toward children ages 3-6. Parent or caregiver must be present.
n Vector-borne Disease Program Specialist with Penn State Extension Lidia Azurdia Sierra will present a free program on tick prevention at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, at the library.
Tick-borne disease causes major health problems. Learn how to stay safe this summer when you’re outdoors. This program is free. RSVP by messaging the library on Facebook or by signing up at the checkout desk.
n Local artist and teacher Ann Bickel’s “Write Stuff” Cursive Art Camp teaches kids ages 8-12 cursive handwriting fundamentals via fun art activities like cartooning, drawing, chalk pastels and paint along with specific writing instruction to help children make all of the cursive letters and then use the new skills to create fun and gorgeous art pieces.
In five days, kids learn the entire upper case and lower case cursive alphabet. This year’s Write Stuff runs from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Monday, July 13, through Friday, July 17.
