Altoona chess tournament starts July 9

The first round of the 2026 Altoona City Chess Tourament will begin on July 9, with the final round on

Aug. 6. Registration fee is $15 with all money going toward prizes.

These will be unrated games (five round Swiss system with one round per week).

Games may be played during the regular meeting of the Altoona Chess Club at the Altoona Area Public Library from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., or at any other time before the next round.

AFSCME retirees to meet July 1

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Retirees Subchapter 8306 will meet at 1:30 p.m. July 1 at the Union Hall on Patch Way Road.

The executive board will meet at 12:30 p.m. New members are encouraged to attend.

NARVRE meeting canceled for July

The July meeting of NARVRE Unit 173 has been canceled due to the July 4th holiday.

The next meeting will be held Wednesday, Aug. 5, at Prime Sirloin Buffet.

Civil War Round Table to meet

The Central PA Civil War Round Table will meet at

7 p.m. Tuesday, July 7, in the Mazza Center of the South Hills School of Business and Technology, 480 Waupelani Drive, State College.

Jim Pula of New York Mills, New York, will speak on “The 11th Corps at Chancellorsville.”

All members and anyone interested in joining the Central PA Civil War Round Table are encouraged to attend.

Indiana ballroom group plans dance

Indiana Ballroom Dance Group will celebrate our semiquincentennial with a community dance on Saturday July 11, at the Eagles, 420 Philadelphia St., Indiana.

The doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

Music for dancing will be provided by DJ Sam from 7 to 10 p.m.

Bring a snack to share. There will be a cash bar. Dress is casual, and there is no fee to attend. Donations will be accepted with proceeds to be given to the Indiana County Semiquincentennial Fund.

Auditions set for ‘Trailer Park Musical’

Auditions for “The Great American Trailer Park Musical” will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 2, at The Playhouse, 11680 Raystown Road in McConnellstown.

Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 21, 22, 28 and 29 with Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Aug. 23 and 30.

Come prepared with piano sheet music and 16 bars from your favorite musical (no tracks). Cold script readings will also be arranged. This show will be directed by Oscar Pollock and Abby Lambert. Inquiries should be directed to mail@littletheater.com. Note that show contains adult themes and humor; it may not be suitable for anyone under 18 years old.

Casting for this production requires seven thespians of any gender, race and ethnicity, ages 18 and older.

All casting decisions are at the discretion of the Creative Team. Interested thespians can peruse a copy of the script in advance by emailing mail@littletheater.com.

In addition to actors and actresses, organizers also are looking for assistance with stage crew, technical production, concessions, front of house, set construction, marketing and parking.

While experience is helpful, The Playhouse at McConnellstown does not require previous experience.
