Lakemont Lions plan chicken barbecue
The Lakemont Lions Club will hold a chicken barbecue fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (or until sold out) on Saturday, May 30, at the Greenwood Lions Park, East Walton Avenue and Greenwood Road in Logan Township.
The meal includes a large half chicken, baked beans, applesauce and a roll. Dinners are $12 each. Tickets can be purchased from club members or by calling 814-232-5944. Proceeds will support Lakemont Lions community service.

Patton Garden Club sets plant sale
The Patton Garden Club’s Annual Plant Sale will be held from 8 a.m.. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 6, at the Fix-It Shop on Fifth and Park Avenue in Patton.
There will be annuals, perennials, natives, house plants and vegetable plants. Proceeds benefit the Patton Garden Club Scholarship Fund.

Summer band rehearsals begin June 1
The Community Summer Band will begin rehearsals for its 35th season in celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, June 1, in the social hall of the First Baptist Church, Sixth and Mifflin Streets, Huntingdon.
The group will hold rehearsals in preparation for old-fashioned outdoor band concerts scheduled for Tuesday, July 28, at Sharrar House, Mount Union; Thursday, July 30, at Huntingdon’s Blair Park; and Friday, July 31, on the lawn of the Memorial Library in Alexandria.
The band plays a variety of music and is conducted by John Kuehl, with assistance from Huntingdon Music Department staff members Rick Kane, Jordan Canner.
Those considering participating need not be present at all rehearsals or available to play all concerts to become involved and that instruments are available for loan.

Alpha Beta Chapter celebrates founders
The Alpha Beta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society met May 5 at Arrowhead Estates’ Community Building in Cessna.
Funds from this year’s craft show will enable the chapter to contribute to community concerns and to offer grants to classroom educators. The 2026-27 budget was approved.
The group made a $600 contribution to school improvements at the Jabulani School in Zimbabwe.
Jennifer Harclerode, first vice president, introduced Samantha Sollenberger, recipient of a Teacher Enrichment Grant from Alpha Beta. A third-grade teacher at Chestnut Ridge Elementary, Sollenberger said the money was used to purchase flash cards for the third-grade team to impact 65 students and to trace growth through data.
The “Stuff the Bus” event held at Weis Market in Everett on March 25 collectied funds and food items for the weekend backpack programs in the area. Alpha Beta will award the Community Partner Award to Jack Helsel, manager, and Weis Market.
Harclerode also coordinated the program “Meet the Founders of DKG.” The presentation involved 12 current members who used costumes and the women’s own words to portray those early leaders.
The next chapter meeting will be at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, at the Bistro on the Village Green, Martinsburg.
Law enforcement golf event is June 5
The Blair County Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Foundation will hold its 23rd annual golf tournament on June 5 at the King Valley Golf Course.
This event is held to raise funds for the foundation.

Workshop to focus on OCC shoeboxes
The Penn Valley Area volunteer team will hold an Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Packing Workshop from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 6, at Grace Bible Church, 164 Laurel Lane, Hollidaysburg.
Topics will include: what a fun, full, personalized shoebox looks like, how to teach and encourage others to pack fun, full, personalized shoeboxes and ideas for having a successful shoebox project.

Civics to host speed dating event
The Juniata Civic Association will host a speed dating event, “55+ Single and Ready to Mingle,” from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 6, at 206 W. 12th Ave., Altoona.
There will be light refreshments served and questions to initiate conversation.
Tickets are available at Thompson’s Pharmacy on East Chestnut Avenue and are $20.

Auditions set for Winners’ Showcase
Off Pitt Street Theater Company will hold auditions for the 10th Annual Winners’ Showcase, at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 31, and 6 p.m. Monday, June 1.
The showcase is directed by Johnnie Matney. The Showcase is the world premier of the first and second place winners of the OPS Open Playwriting Contest.
This year’s winners are “Death at a Diner” by Felita Daniels, first place; and “With Her Apron High” by Mark Anderson, second place. Shows are at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, July 10 and 11.
