Choruses celebrate America250
“I Hear America Singing” will be presented by the Allegheny Chorale at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 26, at St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1407 Eighth Ave., Altoona, and at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, at First Presbyterian Church, 13th Street and Logan Avenue, Tyrone.
The free concerts celebrating America’s 250th will begin with the Presentation of Colors by Boy Scout Troop 103 followed by the singing of the “Star-Spangled Banner.”
The chorale, now in its 41st season, has an eclectic American program to share with the audience to celebrate 250 years of American independence.
One arrangement, “Our Song of Freedom,” includes these patriotic favorites: “You’re A Grand Old Flag,” “Yankee Doodle Boy” and “America the Beautiful.” Two pieces are musical settings of American poetry, “America the Dream: and “Songs for the People.”
During the program, military service members and first responders will be honored for their service to our communities. “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” featuring both accompanists with four hands at the piano, promises to be a stirring and powerful rendition of the much loved song.
As a special treat at the Tyrone concert, the 46th Pennsylvania Regiment Band, a prominent local Civil War reenactment band that performs period-accurate music using 19th century brass instruments — all while dressed in authentic Union uniforms — will perform as people are gathering for the concert as well as during the intermission.
The Allegheny Chorale is under the musical direction of Deborah Estright, assisted by Karen Mayhew. The accompanists are Anna Myers, assisted by Susan Broadbent, and the percussionist is Paul Turner. The Chorale is governed by a Board of Directors currently led by President, Janet Pearson.
