Readiness Institute Program for rising high school seniors

IU8 partners with Penn State Outreach to offer paid participation

Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 announced its partnership with Penn State Outreach to bring the Readiness Institute Summer Discovery program to rising high school seniors in Bedford, Blair, Cambria and Somerset counties.

This five-week, paid learning experience is designed to prepare students for college, career and life alongside a cohort of peers.

It will take place from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday from June 29 to July 30.

The program has been made available locally in part due to generous funding from the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies and the Central Pennsylvania Community Foundation.

The Readiness Institute Summer Discovery program provides students with hands-on learning, professional skill development, and networking opportunities with industry leaders. The program is open to current high school juniors who will be seniors in Fall 2026, offering an immersive summer experience that helps young adults build confidence, leadership and career readiness.

What participants can expect:

n $1,500 stipend for full participation in the program.

n Real-world experience through workshops, projects and mentorship.

n Development of essential communication, problem-solving and leadership skills.

n Exposure to various career paths and higher education opportunities.

n Direct engagement with local employers, Penn State faculty and industry experts.

“The Readiness Institute Summer Discovery program is a summer opportunity as well as an investment in the future of our region,” said Dr. Thomas Butler, executive director of IU8 “By equipping young adults with career-ready skills and professional connections, this initiative supports the long-term economic growth of Bedford, Blair, Cambria, and Somerset counties by creating confident, skilled, and prepared individuals ready to contribute to their communities through further education or direct entry into the workforce.”
