Volunteers needed for cemetery cleanup

Volunteers and Friends of Rose Hill Cemetery will hold a cleanup day at the cemetery, 501 E. Pleasant

Valley Blvd., Altoona, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday April 11.

This is a rain or shine event. Lunch, snacks and drinks will be provided. Questions may be sent to Friendsofrosehillcemetery@gmail.com.

Railway employees to meet Wednesday

The National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 1, at Prime Sirloin.

NARVRE is the only chartered national organization whose sole purpose is to protect pension rights.

All retired, veteran and present employees (and their spouses) are invited to attend the meeting of NARVRE Unit #173, Altoona. Members and nonmembers are welcome.

AFSCME Retirees to meet Wednesday

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Retirees subchapter 8306 will meet at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, at the Union Hall on Patch Way Road. New members are welcome.

The executive board will meet at 12:30 p.m.

Zupe to perform at ballroom dance

Centre Ballroom will sponsor a dance from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 12, at Lambert Hall, Bellefonte.

Admission is $10 per person. Take a snack to share. Entertainment will be provided by Zupe.

Civil War Round Table to meet April 7

The Central PA Civil War Round Table will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, in the Activities Room of the South Hills School of Business & Technology, 480 Waupelani Drive, State College.

Dr. Charles Fennell will speak on “Culp’s Hill and Little Round Top: A Tale of Two Hills.”

Fennell received his Ph.D. in American history from West Virginia University in 1992 and taught history at the college level for 44 years. He has been a licensed battlefield guide at Gettysburg National Military Park for 40 years.

Fennell has published several articles on the American Civil War and Reconstruction and is a frequent speaker at Civil War Round Tables.

PARSE hears about retiree benefits

The Pennsylvania Association of Retired State Employees, Blair, Bedford, Huntingdon Chapter 1-10 met March 17 at the American Legion Social Hall, Hollidaysburg.

Steve Brown from the Bureau of Employee Benefits, Harrisbur, gave a detailed presentation on the Retired Employee Health Program (REHP) including benefits for 2026: Healthy Rewards, the addition of Thyme Care cancer support (does not replace existing providers) and how REHP compares to other plans offered in Blair County. A question-answer session followed.

During the business meeting, President Sharon Dell encouraged members to contact PA State Sen. Scott Hutchinson (717-787-9684) to request Senate Bill 721 concerning a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) be brought out of committee for a vote. Hutchinson chairs the Senate Finance Committee.

The next chapter meeting is scheduled for May 19 at the same location and time when PARSE regional vice president Joan Matterness will be the guest presenter.

All state retirees are invited to join PARSE where they will be kept updated on information pertinent to them and also enjoy food and fellowship

Penn Association to make donations

Members of the William Penn Association, Branch 800, Altoona, met March 9.

Members voted on the following: to participate in the Home Office Easter Basket program by providing a supermarket gift card to each of four local families; to join the association’s Hunger Project by making a monetary donation to Catholic Charities, St. Vincent DePaul Food Kitchen and the American Rescue Workers; and to mail a contribution to St. Dismas Parish at the State Correctional Institution, Huntingdon.

The WPA is a fraternal organization with headquarters in Pittsburgh and branches throughout the U.S.

Altoona Story League to meet April 3

The Altoona Story League will meet at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 3, at the St. James Lutheran Church, 1407 Eighth Ave., Altoona, behind the Altoona Junior High School.

Parking is available at the right side of the church, and those attending should enter using the side door.

All are welcome to attend as the group continues to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the U.S.

A member will share several techniques to assist story tellers in their presentation and a storyteller has prepared a story from our U.S. history.
