Lions seek donations for disaster relief
Lakemont Lions Club members are asking the local community to support disaster relief during the month of February.
“For the Love of Giving” is the name given to the effort by Lakemont Lions to raise funds for growing needs where disasters have struck. Whether for the next disaster to hit locally or elsewhere in the United States, Lakemont Lions seek donations to help.
Lakemont Lions will be collecting monetary contributions from 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 14 and 21 at the Hollidaysburg Hometown Market.
Those unable to get to the collection site during those hours can mail a check or money order, made payable to Lakemont Lions Club to 301 Union Ave., No. 325, Altoona PA 16602. Those doing so are asked to add “For the Love of Giving” or “Disaster Relief” at the check’s memo line.
Members of the Lakemont Lions Club will determine the recipient(s) of funds raised.
Last year’s “For the Love of Giving” funds were designated for the Pacific Palisades wildfires. A check for $676.30 was sent to the California Lions Foundation, in support of the victims of the disastrous wildfire there.
Lakemont Lions Club serves the local community through activities related to the eight key Lions global causes of childhood cancer, diabetes, disaster relief, Eenvironment, humanitarian, hunger, vision and youth.
The Lakemont club also conducts activities benefitting veterans, delivers holiday flowers to shut-ins, helps with bingo at nursing homes and many other activities.
Lions Club International Foundation provides monetary assistance across the globe in support of those affected by disasters.
Lakemont Lions welcomes new members. Information on joining Lakemont Lions Club is available by calling Club President Mike O’Neill at 814-615-3538.
Area clubs and nonprofits can email articles and photos to community@altoonamirror.com. For more information, call Brenda Carberry, community news coordinator, at 814-946-7459.
