"History Speaks," the lecture series of the Blair County Historical Society, will present its final event of the year, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, at the Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum.
"Altoona's German Heritage and History" will be presented by Harald Dertinger, historian and himself a German native.
The illustrated talk will highlight Altoona's German clubs and culture since the 1860s, the Altoona Symphony Orchestra approaching its centennial after Russell Gerhard founded a string quartet in 1928, and a German heritage exhibit of items now displayed at the Baker Mansion Museum.
This special museum exhibit has only a few weekends remaining before it closes after a two-year run.
Also included in Dertinger's presentation is original research on German immigration in the 17th century, plus the immigration journey of himself and that of Liselotte Schwarz of Altoona, who passed away this past May at 100 years of age.
A brochure of Altoona German heritage, as well as and other publications of local historical significance, (including a newly released Lakemont Park illustrated history booklet), will be available for purchase.
Unique local-themed gift items for Christmas are included.
Admission is free, while donations will be accepted.
