Military Food Share set for Monday
The monthly Military Food Share at the Duncansville VFW 8724 will be held on Monday, Nov. 10, beginning at 11 a.m.
This is for all active military, veterans and widows or widowers of veterans living in Blair County. A military ID, DD214 or VA card and photo ID are required. Please enter from Dunnings Highway/Newry Lane and line up on Turek Drive.
VFW to host chili cook-off Nov. 14
The Duncansville VFW 8724 will host a chili cook-off on Friday, Nov. 14. The event is open to the public.
Set up/tasting will begin at 6 p.m. Cost is $5 per person for tasting. Judging will begin at 8 p.m., and winners will be announced at 8:30 p.m.
Contestants need to sign up at the post by Wednesday, Nov. 12.
Contra Dance to be held Nov. 15
The State College Friends School will co-host a family-friendly Contra Dance from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at the school, 1900 University Drive, State College.
Lessons for new dancers begin at 6 p.m. All dances are taught and easy to learn. Terry Bachmann will call the dances to music by Unbowed with Henry Koretzky on mandolin and Mike Henry on guitar. Suggested donation is $15 to help cover the cost of the space, caller and musicians. Refreshments will be available.

Historical society to meet in Duncansville
The Duncansville Area Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, at the Duncansville Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1200 Fourth Ave. Enter by door "D" at the rear of the church.
Jim Snyder will discuss "James Funk's Limestone Kilns in Duncansville."
The society is encouraging more local people to attend the meetings. The society is interested in copies of pictures and information regarding Duncansville. Information can be sent to Nancy DeLozier, P.O. Box 115, Duncansville, PA 16635.
The society meets on the second Tuesday of every other month, except January.
Pancake brunch to help the poor
The Society of St Vincent DePaul, St Therese of The Child Jesus Conference, will serve an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday,
Nov. 16, in Father Kelley Hall, corner of 25th Avenue and Fifth Street, Altoona.
It will include two sausages, coffee, tea, hot chocolate and juice. Gluten-free pancakes also will available.
Tickets are $8 and kids under 5 are free. There will also be two gift board raffles valued at more than $300 each and a lottery tree raffle. The benefit is to raise money to continue helping the poor in the community.
NARFE to meet Friday at Marzoni's
The Altoona/Blair Chapter of NARFE will meet
Friday, Nov. 14, at Marzoni's in Duncansville. Lunch is at noon with the meeting at 1 p.m.
An AETNA representative will talk about open enrollment for health insurance, Highmark materials will also be available for review.

Country Traditions to perform Nov. 15
The Alum Bank Community Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary will host the band Country Traditions from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15.
Admission is $5 per person. The kitchen will open at 5 p.m. It is a smoke- and alcohol-free atmosphere.

Bedford society plans Christmas tea
The Bedford County Historical Society will hos a Christmas tea at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at the Hall at Kinton's Knob (second floor), 6441 Lincoln Highway, Bedford.
Various teas will be served, along with scones with cream and lemon curd, tea sandwiches and sweets. Other beverages will be available for those that don't drink tea.
Tickets are $25. Reservations are required by Tuesday, Nov. 25 by calling the society at 814-623-2011.
Glendale Garden Club sets tree lighting
The annual Glendale Area Garden Club Tree Lighting will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, in the Community Garden next to the Glendale Area Medical Center.
There will be hot chocolate and assorted snacks. Several community churches will have children's activities. There will be face painting.
There will be a mitten and hats tree providing winter warmth to area children.
Also,through the generosity of the Glendale Volunteer Fire Company, the Coalport Moose and the Coalport VFW, Santa Claus will be at the firehall to distribute treats and visit with area children.
Wine festival to be held Nov. 15
Bishop Carroll Catholic High School will host its 10th annual wine festival from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, in the school cafetorium.
The event will feature wineries, distilleries, gourmet food for purchase and various food and craft vendors.
Second Street will provide live music all evening.
A cash giveaway of prizes totaling $25,000 will be held at 8 p.m.
Tickets for the event are $25, which includes admittance and a wine glass. Tickets can be pre-purchased at the school office or at the door. A $5 admission ticket is available for those wishing to attend and sample the food, but not drink.
