50 years ago: Oct. 23, 1975
The Altoona Area High School team, Linda Rickens and Shelley Stoltenburg co-captains and Kerry Jo Ruffner advisor, won the 10th annual Jaffa Shrine Cheerleading Contest. Roosevelt, Cheryl Cassidy, Renee Schiefer and Leisha Hawk co-captains, won the junior high division.
25 years ago: Oct. 23, 2000
The Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants donated 52 tickets to a Curve baseball game to Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Blair County. About 100 members of both groups attended together for a family day.

An advocacy group called Pennsylvanians for Safe Access was to hold an educational medical cannabis (marijuana) rally at Heritage Plaza in downtown Altoona, Christy Billett co-organizer.

On Oct. 23, 1983, 241 U.S. service members, most of them Marines, were killed in a suicide truck-bombing at the U.S. Marine Corps barracks at Beirut International Airport in Lebanon, while a near-simultaneous attack on French barracks in Beirut killed 58 paratroopers.
