50 years ago: A group called Cinemette Corp. of America in Pittsburgh was building a four-screen movie theater at the Park Hills Plaza, made to seat 1,300 people. Leonard S. Fiore Jr. was the contractor.
25 years ago: A little over three years since fire had severely damaged First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1401 12th Ave., a rededication by Allegheny Synod Bishop Gregory Pile was held after the church had been restored. The Rev. Fred Romig was pastor and Rev. Jaime Olson, associate pastor.
10 years ago: A firm called Choice Hotels was building a new Holiday Inn Express on Convention Center Boulevard and was converting the Holiday Inn Express, formerly a Days Inn on Pleasant Valley Boulevard, to a Clarion Hotel.

– In 1931, mobster Al Capone was convicted in Chicago of income tax evasion; he would be sentenced to 11 years in prison, fined $50,000 and ordered to pay back taxes. Capone was released in 1939.
