Students explore nature and history with trip to Prince Gallitzin State Park

PATTON -- On Wednesday, Sept. 17, students from Cambria Heights enjoyed a field trip to Prince Gallitzin State Park, where they spent the day learning about local history, plants, and animals while experiencing the beauty of the park from the water.
The highlight of the trip was a scenic pontoon boat ride across Glendale Lake. As the students cruised along the water, they listened to fascinating stories about the park's history and the life of Prince Demetrius Gallitzin, the park's namesake. They also discovered facts about the diverse plants and animals that call the park home.
In addition to exploring the lake, students took part in a hands-on science activity where they were able to catch, tag and release monarch butterflies. Through this experience, they learned about the monarchs' life cycle and their long migration journey to Mexico each year.
Leading the adventure was park ranger Leo Magulick, who served as an informative and enthusiastic tour guide. His passion for nature and local history helped bring the lessons to life for the students.
The students also received helpful guidance from Mindy Strong at the marina shop, who assisted them during their time off the water.
The day was filled with fun, learning and appreciation for the natural beauty in our own community.
