Cloggers to hold Try-It Night Monday
The Horseshoe Cloggers will hold a Try-It Night at
7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, at the Newry Lion's Club.
Weekly classes will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Mondays beginning Oct. 6. The monthly class fee is $25 per person or $40 per family. Beginner classes will run for 10 weeks with a graduation ceremony in December. Cost for the beginner's class is $60.
The club encourages anyone 8 years to 100-plus to come and try it out.
The Horseshoe Cloggers are a very welcoming group that are always looking for new dancers, and you don't have to have a dancing background. This is a dance for everyone, young and old.

AFSCME Retirees to meet Wednesday
The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Retirees Subchapter 8306 will meet at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, at the Union Hall on Patch Way Road, Duncansville.
The executive board wil meet at 12:30 p.m.
Newry Lions to hold barbecue Oct. 4
The Newry Lions CLub will hold a chicken barbecue dinner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at Newry Lions Park, behind Leighty's Market in Newry.
Tickets are $12, which can be purchased at the door or from Lions Club members.
Meals are dine in or take out.
Railway employees to meet Wednesday
The National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, at Prime Sirloin Buffet, Duncansville.
NARVRE is the only chartered national organization whose sole purpose is to protect pension rights.
All retired, veteran and present railway employees (and their spouses) are invited to attend.

Lakemont Lions to hold barbecue
The Lakemont Lions Club will hold a takeout chicken barbecue from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Greenwood Lions Park, Walton Avenue and Greenwood Road in Logan Township.
The meal includes a large half chicken, baked beans, applesauce and a roll. Dinners are $12 each. Tickets can be purchased from any club member or by calling 814-232-5944.
Proceeds will support Lakemont Lions' community service through activities related to the eight key Lions project priorities of childhood cancer, diabetes, disaster relief, environment, humanitarian efforts, hunger, vision and youth. The club also conducts activities benefiting veterans, delivers holiday flowers to shut-ins and many other activities. The club collects used eyeglasses as part of the Lions Recycle for Sight program, providing eyeglasses to people in under-developed countries, last year providing more than 7,500 pair.
Lions Club International Foundation provides monetary assistance across the globe in support of those affected by disasters.

Swinging Squares announces dances
Swinging Squares Square and Round Dance Club meets on Thursday evenings at the Jaggard Street United Methodist Church in Altoona. Pre-rounds are from 6 to 6:30 p.m., class lessons are from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and the club dance is from 8 to 9 p.m.

VFW to host 'Red, White, Boo!' Oct. 25
The U.S. Armed Forces Mothers Squad 41 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8724 will present "Red White and Boo!" on Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Duncansville VFW Post. The doors will open at 5 p.m.
Tickets are $25 per person or $175 for table of eight. Tickets include a buffet meal and music by the band Pletchvello from 7 to 10 p.m. The event benefits active duty military.
Tickets can be purchased at CentralPAticket.com, Unkel Joe's Woodshed or from any member of the Mothers. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes. There will be a cash bar, basket raffle and 50/50.
DAR hears about Indian training school
The Adam Holliday Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution met Sept. 13 at the Hollidaysburg Area Public Library.
Jodie Stouffer told the history of the Martinsburg Indian Training School founded by Professor Philip Bridenbaugh that existed from 1885-1888. Native American students were from the Osage and Oneida Nations and were trained in careers to live a useful and independent life not dependent on government assistance.
Hollidaysburg Mayor Chad A. Repko presented the Constitution Week Proclamation to the chapter. Government proclamations were displayed in the Blair County Courthouse kiosk and were also received from U.S. Rep. John Joyce, Gov. Josh Shapiro, Sen. Judy Ward, Rep. Lou Schmitt and Rep. Scott Barger. "Bells Across America" were rung in unison throughout the U.S. at 4 p.m. on Constitution Day, Sept. 17. Patriotic gift bags were given to elementary students at Bishop Guilfoyle Academy Hollidaysburg campus.
Chapter members attended SAR dedications of Revolutionary War Patriots at the Hollidaysburg Presbyterian Cemetery on Aug. 23, and Engagement at Frankstown Monument on Sept. 20. Both events were organized by SAR President Larry Smith.
Any woman at least 18 years of age who can prove lineal descent to a patriot who served in the Revolutionary War or gave aid to American Colonists is eligible for DAR membership. Genealogy help is available. For more information, visit http://pssdar.org/chapter_sites/adamholliday
