July 12, 1950
Altoona military draft boards 32 and 33, Attorney Robert W. Anthony chairman of board 33, were awaiting the quotas or number of men the military required drafted due to the outbreak of the Korean War.
July 12, 1975
The Loretto, private railroad car of steel magnate Charles Schwab, began its trip to Altoona from Bloomsburg by being pulled through a cornfield by a Caterpillar tractor to reach Interstate 80. Mid-State and Central Counties Banks were financing the $14,800 cost.
July 12, 2000
A company called Labor Ready Worldwide Inc. of Tacoma, Wash., was suing Boyer Candy Co. for $85,000 it said it was owed for providing replacement workers when Boyer employees were on strike.

A Drive-in/ Fly-in was held at the Altoona-Blair County Airport in Martinsburg with several home built planes among those on display.
July 13, 1950
Col. W.A. Morgan announced that the following divisions were being formed for the Blair County Defense System in light of the Korean War with Judge George G. Patterson in charge: educational, security, communications, utilities, medical, evacuation and technical.
A new gasoline station called the Hunter and Williams Friendly Pennzoil Service Station was to hold a grand opening tomorrow at 3821 Sixth Ave. Mr. Hunter and Mr. Williams also had a Mobile Station in State College and both were World War II veterans.
July 13, 1975
As part of the Altoona Urban Renewal Plan, both the former Emerson (1883) and (1886) Lincoln Elementary Schools on Seventh Avenue were being razed. Both also once served with Altoona High School classes.
Shawnee Hand, 9, Tyrone, assisted head lifeguard Robert Irwin with saving a young girl from drowning at the Tyrone Swimming Pool. She lifted the girl’s head from the water and got her to the edge of the pool while Irwin administered mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

Conrail agreed to pay $3 million in criminal penalties and $1.1 million in civil penalties for dumping hundreds of thousands of pounds of hazardous waste on land at its facilities in Hollidaysburg and Juniata. A three-year investigation was led by PA Attorney General Mike Fisher.
Altoona Police, John Roefaro firearms instructor, was using a computer simulator, a white screen where different situations were used and the officers using guns with a laser mounted on it which were marked on the screen if it was necessary to fire.
July 13, 2015
S&A Homes of State College announced a $13 million renovation of Highland Hall in Hollidaysburg, built in 1840 and vacant for about 12 years. A total of 53 senior housing units were planned with financing from the PA Housing Finance Agency.
The Altoona Chorus of Sweet Adelines, Ann George director, won second place at the Atlantic Bay-Mountain Region #19 singing competition in Ocean City, Md. The chorus was only five points behind winner Philadelphia Freedom Chorus. A total of 18 choruses from four states were part of the competition.
