Joseph Monti, 68, father of Altoona School District music supervisor John Monti, died June 6. After coming here from Italy where he served in the Italian Army band, he formed the first Italian band in Altoona and the Christopher Columbus Band later. He also played, arranged and composed for the Pennsylvania Railroad Band in Tyrone and Altoona, played in local movie theater orchestras, taught music and was a member of the American Federation of Musicians.

Ligia Lusardi of Hollidaysburg was awarded the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Gold Medal (For the Church and the Pope) from Pope Paul VI in ceremonies at St. Bernardine's Monastery, Hollidaysburg RD, for many years of service to the monastery and St. Michael's Parish in Hollidaysburg.

Elaine Conrad, who lived on Wopsononock Mountain, worked as a medical photographer at Altoona Hospital was named an Altoona Mirror Woman of Distinction. Conrad's main interest was local history with thousands of slides and hundreds of postcards.

Altoona Area High School graduated 516 students in ceremonies at Mansion Park with Joshua Henry and Hannah Love combining as salutatorians and Emily Dell as valedictorian.

Altoona Catholic High School was to hold graduation exercises for 101 students next week at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament with Bishop Richard T. Guilfoyle presiding while Altoona Senior High School, Joseph N. Maddocks principal, was to hold graduation ceremonies for 729 at the Jaffa Mosque next week.
The Altoona Chamber of Commerce, G. Stanley Ruth manager, announced that all the downtown retail stores would now close at 5 p.m. Saturdaya and that all stores would close at 5 p.m. every day except Monday, when they would be open until 8:30 p.m.

Connie Harness, 20, Mechanicsburg, was chosen Miss Pennsylvania in ceremonies at the Jaffa Mosque, making her eligible for the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City, N.J. For her talent competition, she sang the operatic song "Romance from the Desert Song."
The Evergreen Manors Youth Council Garden Club, Tammy Lang and Ron Miller coordinators, were planting a vegetable garden on the Hollidaysburg State Hospital grounds. They had also formed a Youth Action group and physical fitness team.

Developer Greg Morris announced that Home Depot was to be one of the anchor stores at the proposed Logan Town Centre shopping complex along I-99 in Logan Township. Giant Eagle, Barnes and Noble Book Store and Best Buy electronics had also committed.
The owners of WRTA-AM and WBXQ-FM radio stations were asking the Federal Communications Commission to block the sale of WVAM-AM and WPRR-FM to a Georgia company because it was closely linked to Forever Broadcasting, which already owned four local stations.

Mike Flaherty won the Contact Altoona Grand Slam Sports Fundraiser: tickets to the Pittsburgh Pirates, Steelers and Penguins, Penn State football and Altoona Curve baseball games. Gary Reid was Contact Altoona board president.
Blair County commissioners planned to build a children's playground at Fort Roberdeau in Sinking Valley, next to White Oak Hall, the main building on the grounds. About 100 logs forming a 12-foot high wall had to be replaced because they were deteriorating. Glenn H. Nelson was director at Fort Roberdeau.
