Hollidaysburg library plans programs, activities for June
The Hollidaysburg Area Public Library has announced its activities for June. The library will be closed on Thursday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth.
n Canasta and Mah Jongg games are held at 11 a.m. Mondays. Beginners are welcome.
n Needlework & Arts Group is held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays. Bring your own materials and projects for this crafting club intended for adults.
n Twisted Stitchers meet from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays. Bring your own project, yarn and hooks; spend time with other crafters.
n Talking History will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 5. “Dr. Daniel Hale Williams: Black Medical Pioneer.” In 1893, Dr. Williams’ performed the first successful open-heart surgery. Harriett L. Gaston, DSU Advisor at Penn State Altoona and community historian, will deliver a lecture providing details on Dr. Williams’ life in Hollidaysburg and his contributions to the medical field.
n Luau for the Littles, 1 p.m. Thursday, June 12. Join Foot of Ten Elementary School’s Community Service Club at the library for this program. Activities are geared toward 2-6 year-olds. Children must be accompanied by a caregiver. Feel free to dress in summer/Hawaiian attire.
n Paws to Read will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 14. Meet and read to pets from the Central PA Humane Society. Children ages 5 and up are welcome with their caregivers.
n Altoona/Blair County Photo Society (ABCPS) will meet at 6:30 p.m. Mondays, June 2 and 16. The society gathers to discuss a variety of topics, including taking and editing pictures. Learn something new with any type of camera or smart phone. New members are welcome. Call 814-207-1479 with questions.
n Community Yard Sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 14, in the library parking lot. Fifteen individual spaces will be available for $15 each; spots may be reserved in person at the library. There will also be a sale in the library Community Room. n Inspirational Book Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 12. This month’s book selection is “The Rescuer” by Dee Henderson.
n Women Writers Book Club will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 18. This month’s book is “Sense and Sensibility” by Jane Austen.
n The Adult Summer Book Club for this year will be themed “Family Ties.” The first meeting will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 26. We will be reading “100 Years of Solitude” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
n Summer Reading for Children: “Color Our World,” June 16 to July 31.
Mondays, Maker Monday — All day/all ages.
Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 10:30 a.m. — Storytime and Craft/all ages.
Tuesdays, 1 p.m. — “Create Like the Greats”: crafts for kids K-6th grade.
Thursdays, 1 p.m. — Special events each week.
Fridays, 1 to 3 p.m. — LEGO Club.
Book Bucks are back.Children receive Book Bucks for every library program they attend this summer. Book bucks are also awarded for independent reading. Book Bucks can be used to buy cool prizes in the library’s Book Buck Store. Stop by the library to sign up for Summer Reading!
Adult and Teen Color Our World BOOKopoly! June 1 to July 31, read to earn raffle tickets for gift cards. This year, teens and adults read their way to prizes the Monopoly way. Game cards are available at the library Circulation Desk. Raffle drawings will be held July 31. (New this year: TEEN ONLY raffle prizes).
n StoryWalk Hollidaysburg. Join us in Downtown Hollidaysburg for this fun, family-friendly self-guided walk. Read the book “I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More” by Karen Beaumont on each storefront poster as you stroll. Pick up or download a StoryWalk map and worksheet (one for each child) at one of the following spots: Hollidaysburg Area Public Library, Copy-Rite Banner Zone, Blair County Regional YMCA, HollidaysburgPartnership.com, or HACP Facebook. Each child receives a free book of their choosing upon completion. The program runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, Sept. 1.
