Military Food Share set for May 12
The monthly Military Food Share distribution at the Duncansville VFW Auxiliary 8724 will be held Monday, May 12, beginning at 11 a.m.
This is for all active military, veterans and widows or widowers of veterans living in Blair County. We are currently serving veterans in need and give to individuals who qualify by the income guidelines. A military ID, DD214 or VA card and photo ID are required. Please enter from Dunnings Highway/Newry Lane and line up on Turek Drive.
Any person interested in volunteering can enter the parking lot and speak with Donna George.
The VFW and its auxiliary wishes to thank all the volunteers and local businesses for helping to keep this program going each month.
Auxiliary meetings are held at 6 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month at the Duncansville VFW 1665 Newry Lane.
Membership is open to individuals related to a veteran who has served overseas in a location of foreign conflict, earning the campaign medals eligible. That veteran can be a living or deceased spouse, parent, child, sibling, grandparent or grandchild. Contact the VFW at 814-695-9703 for more information or ask one of our volunteers.
Food shares are held monthly on the second Monday. Additional distributions are scheduled for June 9 and July 14. Please mark on your calendars.
Newry Lions to host ‘Bark in the Park’
Newry Lions Club will host its second annual “Bark in the Park” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at Newry Lions Club Park, 400 Lions Club Road, Newry.
During the 2024 inaugural event, more than $1,500 was raised and donated to local animal rescue organizations.
The event will feature a number of food and craft vendors, entertainment from local organizations, pet-themed displays, a dog parade, prizes, local animal rescue organizations and much more.
Admission to the event is free; dogs are welcome and must be on a leash.
Proceeds from the event benefit local animal rescue organizations.

Altoona Class of 1964 to meet for lunch
The Altoona High School Class of 1964 meets for lunch at 11:30 a.m. on the third Thursday of every month.
This month’s meeting will be held Thursday, May 15, at Taps on 2nd Tavern & Grill, 200 Pleasant Valley Blvd., Altoona.

Historical society to meet in Duncansville
The Duncansville Area Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, at the Duncansville Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1200 Fourth Ave.
Warren Baker will present a discussion on the Duncansville Airport. The society is encouraging more local people to attend the meetings.
The society is interested in copies of pictures and information regarding Duncansville. Information can be sent to Nancy DeLozier, P.O. Box 115, Duncansville, PA 16635.
The society meets on the second Tuesday of every other month, except January.
Rabies clinic planned at Patton Firehall
Patton Fire Company No. 1 will host a rabies clinic from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at the firehall at 410 Magee Ave., Patton.
Rabies shots are $15, distemper/Parvo $20 and grooming of pet’s ears and nails $10; cash only. Pets must be 12 weeks or older to receive shots. Please bring dogs on a leash and cats in a carrier. Please bring paper/license from last year, if you have it to help the line move quickly. Proceeds benefit the Patton Fire Co. No. 1.
Central Class of 1969 to meet Tuesday
The Class of 1969 from Central High School, Martinsburg, will gather for dinner at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, at US Hotel, Hollidaysburg.
Hollidaysburg Class of 1959 to meet
Members of the Hollidaysburg High School Class of 1959 will meet for lunch at 11:15 a.m. Thursday, May 15, in the reserved room at The Dream, 1500 Allegheny St.

Genealogical society to host author
HOLLIDAYSBURG – The Blair County Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 15th, 2025 at the Roller Hojeth Memorial Library, 431 Scotch Valley Rd.
Eric Shields, author of “They Came from Blair County” will present on his book. Some notable Blair County natives include Janet Blair, Charles Schwab and Hedda Hopper.
Shields is a Blair County native and currently calls Altoona home. He is a fan of local history and of those who have helped to create it by using their knowledge and skills in their respective areas of expertise.
In addition to his Blair County books, he looks forward to expanding the series to include other central and western Pennsylvania counties. Greenwood Lions Park rentals available
Lakemont Lions Club’s Greenwood Lions Park, located at Walton Avenue and Greenwood Road in Logan Township, is available for group rentals for the 2025 season.
Greenwood Lions Park is the site of Lakemont Lions’ biannual chicken barbeque fundraisers and other club events. Lions also make the park available for rental, typically through November.
The park features a pavilion that seats up to 76 people at four large picnic tables. Lights and electrical power are provided. Families may utilize an installed charcoal grill. Larger parties may have access to the large-scale barbecue pit.
Other amenities include an area for activities, a restroom and running water (non-potable). A small stream flows next to the park.
The daily rental rate is $75. A $40 nonrefundable deposit is required with the application, with the balance due on or before the event date. The reserved facility can be utilized between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. The club provides trash bags, with the renter responsible for refuse removal upon leaving the park.
Proceeds from park rentals go toward Lakemont Lions’ community service projects. Lion Sondra Stacey currently coordinates park reservations. For information on park rentals, call 717-552-9472.
Lakemont Lions Club serves the local community through vision screenings, activities benefiting veterans, participation in environmental projects, holiday flower deliveries to shut-ins, and many other activities.
The club collects used eyeglasses as part of the Lions Recycle for Sight program, providing eyeglasses to people in under-developed countries.
Lions Club International Foundation provides monetary assistance across the globe in support of persons affected by disasters.

Armed Forces Day celebration planned May 17
Armed Forces Day events will be held Saturday, May 17, at the Wall That Heals in front of the Van Zandt Medical Center on Pleasant Valley Boulevard in Altoona.
The day will feature military displays beginning at 11 a.m.
John Clay is master of ceremonies, and the guest speaker will be John Harlow.

OPS to hold auditions
for ‘6 Apartments’ May 23-24
Off Pitt Street Theater Company announced that auditions are coming up for “6 Apartments”– an ensemble comedy written by Neil McGowan.
Auditions will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, May 23, and 1 p.m. Saturday, May 24.
No experience necessary — only a willingness to learn. There are fun and challenging parts for nine actors of any gender, ages 18 and older.

Martinsburg BPW selling Front Street Subs coupons
Martinsburg Professional Business Women’s (BPW) club has jumped into spring with its second scholarship fundraiser selling Front Street Subs coupons for $12 each.
This also initiates the Teddie Wineland scholarship for aspiring nursing students. Coupons (with no expiration) for a 12-inch sub and a bag of chips are available in Martinsburg from the Altoona First Savings Branch and Martinsburg Community Library or from any current member of Martinsburg BPW through May 22.
The next club meeting will be Thursday, May 22, in Homewood Living Martinsburg’s Terrace Cafe at 437 Givler Drive.
Admission through the Southview entrance starts at 5 p.m. The evening meal of your choice begins by 5:30 p.m., followed by a speaker to be announced and closes with a business meeting where votes will be cast for next year’s officers.
