Groups to sponsor Vietnam Era celebration
JOHNSTOWN — Four local veteran organizations will team up to sponsor the area’s annual celebration of Vietnam Era veterans, slated for Thursday, March 27 at
1st Summit Arena at Cambria County War Memorial.
Veteran Community Initiatives, Inc. (VCI), Conemaugh Valley Veterans, Laurel Highlands Chapter 364 of the Vietnam Veterans of America and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 2 will hold the event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a brief ceremony starting at 10 a.m.
“It’s always a great time and an opportunity to recognize the men and women who served in uniform during that conflict,” said Tom Caulfield, president/director of VCI.
According to John Brown, president of Conemaugh Valley Veterans, the annual celebration reflects our area’s continued commitment to honor local veterans. “We encourage the community to come out and join us, whether they served in uniform at home, abroad or just have a loved one or neighbor who served. The stories and experiences of our veterans and fellow citizens are a collective experience that should never be forgotten.”
The event will include a reading of the names of the 105 individuals from Cambria and Somerset counties who were lost during the war.
“Remembering those who sacrificed everything for us is an important part of keeping their legacy alive,” said Tom Haberkorn, president of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 364.
Dave Wagner, president of DAV Chapter 2, said the day will also include displays of Vietnam era memorabilia, a light lunch and music from the era performed by the local band, Three of Hearts.
“People can come enjoy each other’s company, some music and memorabilia,” said Wagner. “It’s also a great opportunity to learn about the resources available to assist our veterans.”
The Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act was signed into law in 2017, setting aside March 29 as the official day to reflect on the service of those in uniform during the Vietnam War.
The group stresses that veterans of all eras and their family members are welcomed. Free parking is available at the Renaissance Center Parking Garage located nearby at 316 Vine St. For questions, call VCI at 814-255-0355.
