HASD Tigers Against Bullying announces poster winners

Riley McFarland and Emma Madden

The Hollidaysburg Area School District’s Tigers Against Bullying recently announced the winners of a poster contest in which students were to depict kindness and empathy.

Students in the Senior High and Junior High schools told a story through visual art — markers, colored pencils, pencil, paint or digital art using computer applications. The poster was to show kindness and empathy by speaking out for what is right and including others.

Elementary students (grades 4-6) used markers, colored pencils, pencil and paint to show a scene helping a friend, showing empathy and standing up for themselves and others.

According to school board member Michele Luther, who created Tigers Against Bullying, the winning entries will be made into 16×20 vinyl posters to be displayed in all of the district’s schools.

Each winner also received a Visa gift card from Tigers Against Bullying.

“It was nice to see what the students designed. We had many entries to choose from,” Luther said. “As the creator of TAB, I am very proud of the students. I am proud to learn this program is working in our district through emails I receive from principals telling of the kind acts our students are doing.”

“You learn through small steps towards the goal,” Luther said. “We as a district are continuing to grow in this area teaching kindness, empathy for one another, and what it means to be a true Tiger Friend.”

Senior High winners of the poster contest are Carter Platon-LaPenna and Kacy Smith; CW Longer, Francesca Servello and Sarah Patt; Foot of Ten, Avery Bennett and Jacob Weyant; Frankstown, Harper Benner and Riley McFarland and Emma Madden. McFarland and Madden worked together on their poster.
