Penn Highlands plans open houses Nov. 11
JOHNSTOWN -- Pennsylvania Highlands Community College will host two Fall Admissions & Athletics Open Houses on Monday, Nov. 11, at the college's Richland Campus and Blair, Centre County, Ebensburg and Somerset locations.
The first session is at 2:30 p.m. and the second at 5:30 p.m. Those who wish to attend can RSVP by visiting www.pennhighlands.edu/openhouse/. The event is open to the public.
Attendees will go through the admissions and financial aid processes, learn about activities, academics, and athletics, take a tour and have one-on-one conversations with an admissions counselor to discuss their futures.
The Richland Campus is scheduled to have three-to-four faculty members, while others will have one or two.
Directions and addresses for all locations can be found at www.pennhighlands.edu/locations/. Those who fill out a survey upon attending will be entered in a drawing to win a $250 scholarship.
Students part of Global Citizenship Project
WINCHESTER, Va. -- Madison Cavalet of Lilly is one of 50 individuals who were selected for Shenandoah University's 2025 Global Citizenship Project (GCP).
These students, faculty and staff members will travel to one of five international destinations during spring break in March 2025. Participants will learn their destinations and trip leaders at International Convocation on Nov. 20.
The Global Citizenship Project will celebrate its 20th year in 2025. Since its inaugural year in 2005, the Global Citizenship Project has sent more than 1,400 students, staff, faculty and trustees to 69 countries and seven U.S. states and territories so that each participant might learn more about the world and themselves.

ACM Bedford to hold open house Nov. 9
EVERETT -- The Allegany College of Maryland Bedford County Campus will host an open house from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 9.
Prospective students and their families can tour the campus and explore academic majors, career pathways and options for transfer. Faculty and staff will be available to answer questions and take the mystery out of the college admissions, enrollment, financial aid and scholarship process.
The college offers a cost-saving incentive for prospective students -- the chance to win $200, $300 or $500 off their ACM Bedford County Campus tuition. The drawing for tuition vouchers will be held at 11:45 a.m. during the open house event.
Registration for spring 2025 courses opens on Monday, Nov. 4. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2025-26 academic year (August to August) will be available beginning Friday, Dec. 1.

Student participates in SRU's 'Astronots'
SLIPPERY ROCK -- Slippery Rock University's Theatre Department presented its newest production titled "Astronots" with five shows Oct. 18-23 at the Stoner East Black Box Theater.
Written by playwright Mora Harris and directed by Laura Smiley, a SRU associate professor of theater, "Astronots" follows billionaire CEO Alston Garth as he invites four lucky contest winners on a scenic orbit around Earth in an unmanned craft.
When he reveals a larger adventure, the passengers scramble to reverse course, uncertain of their fate, while Alston insists he selected only those prepared to leave Earth behind.
The cast and creative team of "Astronots" included Michael Rodriguez, a freshman acting major from Philipsburg as assistant stage manager.
"We had so much fun creating the world of this play, including playing with weightlessness," said Smiley. "'This play grapples with complex themes through a darkly humorous lens, and this is the perfect time for it. We want to tell stories about being compassionate to ourselves and to each other, and about working together despite our differences. That is an important message for everyone to take away."
Chef Auction raises $50K for scholarships
JOHNSTOWN -- For the second year in a row, the Pennsylvania Highlands Community College Foundation hosted a highly successful Chef Auction at the Frank J. Pasquerilla Conference Center, raising more than $50,000 to support local students pursuing higher education.
All proceeds will benefit both the Supporting Scholars Fund and future culinary arts scholarships at Pennsylvania Highlands Community College. The Supporting Scholars Fund comprises three distinct scholarships awarded annually to multiple recipients: the Destination Graduation, Emerging Leader and Presidential Scholarships.
Culinary students Allison Drass, Patrick Penrod, Zak Salem, and Alex Babal, as well as Chef and Culinary instructor John Dusack, prepared food for the opening reception. In addition, Supporting Scholars Adelyn Dull and Olivia Cavallo shared how the scholarship fund has significantly contributed to shaping their futures.
Eight restaurants participated in providing dinner for more than 200 attendees, with some also supplying packages for the live auction. Overall, more than $35,000 was raised, which was paired with a $15,000 donation from the 1889 Foundation to achieve the grand total.
The event consisted of 11 silent auction items and eight live auction packages to bid on. Nine baskets were given away in a raffle, five luxury vacations were awarded in a separate auction, and a 50/50 drawing was held.
The UPMC Altoona Foundation and Worklink Staffing served as Master Chef sponsors for the event, alongside 13 Executive Chef and 12 Sous Chef sponsors.
Student inducted into Phi Kappa Phi
BATON ROUGE, La. -- Jennifer Randall of Summerhill was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Randall was initiated at University of Bridgeport.
Randall is among approximately 20,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year.
Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10% of seniors and 7.5% of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10% of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.
