Teachers receive CARE Awards

Two Altoona Area School District teachers received Educator CARE Awards during the AASD Staff Opening Day Session on Aug. 19.
These awards are presented annually to an elementary teacher and a secondary teacher who have demonstrated Commitment, Achievement, Responsibility and Excellence in the classroom.
Sharon Berkheimer, a teacher at Pleasant Valley Elementary, received the elementary award.
Berkheimer is a graduate of Altoona Area High School and holds a bachelor's degree from Penn State University, as well as a master's degree from Saint Francis University, Loretto. Berkheimer has worked at the Altoona Area School District since 1996.
The secondary education award recipient was Elizabeth Bronson. Bronson holds a bachelor's degree from Penn State University with certification in social studies. She serves as a social studies instructor at the Altoona Area Junior High School and is the eighth grade student council adviser.
Bronson has been teaching at AASD for the past 26 years.
Each of the award winners received a plaque in recognition of their excellence in teaching, along with a watch from Kranich's Jewelers in Altoona.
The Educator CARE Awards have been presented on an annual basis since 1985 by the school district and the Altoona Area Education Association.
